I have a beautiful new little pug girl and I am having a real hard time housebreaking! I have had her over a month now I am trying to crate train her like I did with my two labs. But no such luck!!! My problem is that she goes potty in her crate and walks through it and lays in it!! :confused3 She can be outside with me or the kids for a prolonged period then we bring her in put her in her crate and within a few minutes she goes to the bathroom!! :earseek: Please any advice is appreciated! I am at my wits end!!

Pugs are notoriously hard to train. Not want you wanted to hear, I know.

Try feeding her in the crate - that may help retrain her to not soil the crate. Usually they don't to soil their bed but some dogs from questionable backgrounds, esp, overcome that instinct by necessity at a young age. Not saying you got her from a questionable place, just common for those dogs. By feeding her in the crate, you may be able to work of that instinct of not soiling where you eat and get her to stop the behavior.

I'm assuming the crate is the right size if she's laying in it?

Our female pug was stubborn as well. I agree, is she actually laying in the spot that she pottyed? If not then the crate is too big.

Pugs are big on praise. So, when she goes potty outside. Praise, praise, praise. We actually gave ours treats when she went potty outside. She is 5 now and still gets one after doing her business.

Make sure to take her out shortly after feeding her. They're so small when they're new that it just goes right thru them.

Good luck and let us know how it goes.

Sorry no advice but we had 2 pugs M/F and pugs are just so loving and cute. We just lost our girl Oct 31st at the ripe old age of 18. RIP Tasha :pug:

Thank you all! I dont think the crate is to big. She actually lays in it and rolls on her back!!! and we all praise her like crazy when she goes outside. I give her 20 minutes after each meal then she goes out. She actually came from a breeder that has bred pugs for over 30 years! So she hasnt come from a puppy mill. She was actually pick of the litter we had a deposit on since sept.1st. I just cant figure it out! I mean my DH's hunting dogs roll in some nasty stuff sometimes but that I know is just their instinct. She really is a sweet girl and she has shown us that she is smart with things that she does. I just cant seem to figure out what is up with her. I am ready to send her to a trainer!! Which I dont want to do, but I cant seem to get through to her! My DSIL has mini poodles and she said it seems all small breeds are stubborn. I think I am going to try feeding her in her crate! Thanks again!!

I don't know if all small breeds are stubborn but I know our Yorkie puppy couldn't poop outside if her life depended on it and she is 9 months old. It is driving us crazy. We take her outside all the time (and we even have another potty trained 10yr old Yorkie outside at the same time doing his business) yet she comes in and somehow sneaks off and uses the bathroom. I don't know how to get it through to her. She is just the sweetest thing and we love her like crazy but that girl needs to learn to potty outside.
