Please explain photopass

We have not been to WDW since 2012 (before magicbands). At that time we did get the Photopass+ (now called Memory Maker). I do not plan on getting MM this time because I don't feel like I need all of those pictures. But, I may want a few. I'm just trying to figure out how this works now..... I see on the MDE app, I can now look at pics that were taken. So, when we go up to a photographer, do we get a card, or do they scan our magicbands?? And, I've heard that ride pics will automatically be sent to your magicbands, is that only if you have MM or does that work for everyone?

How long does it take for the pictures to show on MDE - is it only the app or website too?

In my experience, most are very quick. but sometimes they take up to 24 hours, so I was told by a CM.
