I have been lurking here for a while but am "baffled" on how you lose a percentage of your points. Could someone please explain?

Sorry but don't understand your question. You need to post back and be more specific.

No one loses a percentage of their points. Points could be lost by the member mismanaging them (letting them expire), or by them going into a holding account (cancelling a reservation very late) and not be able to rebook them.

Members can bank points into a future use year.

When DVC offers magical beginnings a new member can 'give up' points in exchange for a lower purchase price.

However, all of the above is under full control of the member.

If you can be more specific you'll get a more direct answer.

Must be the banking deadlines. Is there a certain time frame you have to bank them by ? Sorry about my confusion but this is new to me and just trying to figure it all out! :)

In the first 6 months of your use year you can bank 100% of your current year points. Through 9 months you can bank 50% and through 10 months you can bank 25%. Once you get within the last two months of your use year, you can no longer bank points.

So for simplicities sake, It's August 15 and you have a Februray use year and a total of 200 points but you forget to bank any by July 31. That means that you have until October 31 to bank 50% of your points (100 points). If you don't use the other 100 by January 31, you will lose the 100 points.

Good luck. Don't worry about the confusion. Soon it will all be clear to you.

Oh... I get it now ! :) Thank you! Im sure I will have lots of questions in the next few days ahead. I appreciate all your help and look forward (fingers crossed!) to having you all...."Welcome Home" to me!

Notice that you can bank a percentage of your current year's points, NOT a percentage of the points you have left. For example, with a 150 point contract in the 50% banking window, you can bank 75 points. But if you only have 45 points that you haven't used this year, you can bank all 45 points into next year if you want to. This confuses lots of members at first. ;)

Yes, and the banking window percentages are for your TOTAL points.
In other words, let's say you have 200 points. Prior to the 100% banking deadline you decide to bank 100 points. Now you have 100 points left for your use year. Now, at the 50% window how many points can you bank?... Answer.... 0. Why? Because you have already banked 50% of your TOTAL points for that use year. The same math holds true for the 25% window. Many think they can bank 50% of the points they have LEFT. Not true. Remember the percentages are based on TOTAL points (unless you have contracts at multiple resorts).
This does tend to get a little confusing.

Good luck...

banking percentages are based on the total number of points you own.

Not on unused points.

Isn't that what MG said or am I not understanding something?

Hmmm...So if your use year is Sept. when are the banking deadline windows?

Last day of February (changeable due to Leap Year) for 100%
May 31 for 50%
June 30 for 25%
July 1-August 31 No banking permitted

Huh ?????

In your first post it looked and sounded like you were correcting something that the poster right before you (Maistre Gracey, aka MG) had said. It looked to me like he said the same as you. I was wondering if I misunderstood something?

Sorry for any confusion.

Just speculating but Manning's post was only 12 minutes after MG's post. I'll bet Manning hadn't seen MG's post yet when he replied. This can happen when users use the browser's back/forward buttons to view posts and so they don't get a refreshed view. Just one possible explanantion.

Can you bank more than one time or is once per year?

Along the same lines, can you borrow more than once or is it once a year?

Your right dean. I didn't see the previous post. I didn't understand the response. No problem.

brivers222,
This is where it can get confusing (or it confused me at first anyway :) ).
Yes, you can bank/borrow more than one time a year. But, in the case of the banking deadlines, you can bank no more than the percentage you are at...

Example. Let's say you banked 25% of your points earlier on in your use year and you are coming up to the 25% banking window deadline ... You can not bank anymore points because you already banked 25%.

If you previously banked 25% of your points and you are coming up to your 50% banking window, you can only bank 25% of your points so that the total is 50%...

And you can borrow to the extent that you have points in the next use year--but, you can only borrow points to make an actual reservation.
