I'm searching eBay for an iPod (Wow, 2nd letter capitalization is all the rage these days, huh?) for my upcoming trip.

Did you know there are eight MILLION BILLION iPods on ebay?

I'm trying to find one as cheap as possible, but I'm having trouble narrowing down my search. What would be the best search terms to use? I don't need video, and 1GB is way more than enough space for me. I don't think I want the shuffle- that one doesn't show the song info, right?

Any suggestions on what to search for to help weed through the sea of iPods to find something simple and cheap?

Thanks!!!

Sounds like what you'd like is a 2 GB Nano. I have a 4 GB mini and I love it. They don't make the minis anymore. Just ordered a 60 GB video one.

Real simple. If you don't want the shuffle because it doesn't show the track, and 1GB is more than enough for you, and you want it to be a cheap as possible, then YOU don't need an iPod..... But you can find MP3 players for under $100 that will cover you just fine. I recommend a Sandisk Sansa.

BTW, I am not anti iPod. I have a shuffle and 2 regular iPods.

There are 3 types of iPods on the market.
They are known as: Video (aka iPod, iPod Video, 5G), Nano 2G, and the Shuffle 2G. A number followed by G stands for the generation. So 2G is Second Generation.
The Video comes in two flavors and two colors: 30GB (GB just like the size of a hard drive - because it is a hard drive), and 80GB. There was a 60GB version that the 80GB recently replaced, but it's been discontinued though you may still find some on the shelves. The two colors are Black and White (note back is metallic in both cases, front is the color). They are prone to scratches.

The 80GB will cost $349. It holds up to 20,000 songs, and plays video.
The 30GB will cost $249. It holds up to 7,500 songs, and plays video.

The new Nano comes in 3 flavors and 6 colors: 2GB (silver), 4GB (silver, green, blue, pink, red), 8GB (black, red). They have an aluminum case and are more scratch resistant than the Video as a result.

The 2GB will cost $149. It holds 500 songs.
The 4GB will cost $199. It holds 1000 songs.
The 8GB will cost $249. It holds 2000 songs.

Now at this point you will have noticed that the 8GB Nano is the same price as the 30GB Video, and you're probably saying why get the 8GB Nano at all ever.

Well there are a few reasons:

1)The Video can not use the Nike Plus Pedometer. If your use of the Nano is for walking this is a nice feature
2) Weight, the Video ways about 10 times what a Nano weighs.
3) Size, the Nano is about 25% of the size of the Video.
4) Color choices.
5) Durability and Resiliance (it is Flash Memory not a hard drive, and is made with an Aluminum case). Read as: Nanos are better for kids.

Finally there is the new 2G Shuffle.
This comes in one color: silver. It is 1GB and can therefore store about 250 songs. It also does not have a screen which makes it a little bit different in terms of control (see below). However it weighs only a few ounces, is the size of a matchbook, and has a built in clip (could be worn as a broach).

The Video and the Nano have an LCD screen, you can surf your music and choose what you play, where you start, etc. The shuffle lacks this. You can only listen wherever it picks up (depending on settings you can only make inside iTunes - the Nano and Video as I said can do this on their own), and you can only jump to the next or the previous song, you can't pick a start point.

The Shuffle is $79.

10 CDs is equivalent to about 100 songs. A Shuffle works and he has room to grow.

However 50 CDs is about 500 songs. That will fill a 2G Nano, so a 4G Nano would be the best choice as since it would carry your entire library and grow.

Thank you for that information. :thumbsup2

Cherlyp3...thank you so much!! I have been following this thread as I am kicking around the idea of getting an entry-level iPod for my DD7. I was looking at eBay and can get a Shuffle for $50-ish. Being that I know nothing about them, your post helped a lot. Now if I could just figure out the difference in an iPod and an MP3 player...

Simple. An iPod is an MP3 player that ALSO plays Apple's AAC format of music files. Most ( all? ) "MP3" players that are not an APPLE product can NOT play AAC files ( meaning that they can NOT use the file type delivered as a download via iTunes ).

OK, ETA: yes, and I knew this, you can use a non APPLE MP3 player to use APPLE downloads BUT they require conversion to MP3. Easy enough, but most people won't want to go to that trouble.

they sure can, but I'd still recommend an iPod.

confused... what non Apple product ( mp3 player ) can read an AAC file? Or are you saying something else? Or, do you mean after all the convetring is done?

DD11 wanted an iPod for her birthday, but there was no way I was spending $200.00. I searched all kinds of reviews and found that the SanDisk was exactly what we wanted. It uses Windows Media Player, and you can get a 1GB for less than $100.00. I bought the 256mb for her, but wish I'd gotten a bigger one. She had to remove some songs in order to load up some new ones last time. It really has great sound, too. Being an iPod user myself I had a hard time figuring out how to load it. Probably wouldn't have been nearly as difficult if I hadn't ever used iTunes. Another plus: you can download songs from Walmart for about .77 cents. iTunes cost .99 cents each.

Oh, and her Sandisk is also FM radio with presets. Very cool.

a quick file conversion. any mp3 player can read an AAC file after a conversion.

I wouldn't buy any mp3 player than a Nano. especially a HDD based player, and that includes all iPods.

So, my basic premise was correct... I wasn't figuring that most people would not want to convert just have it on a non MP3 player. Most people want it as simple as possible. Though, I agree, it isn't too big a deal.

sorry i'm no help. i'm still in the dark ages, i have a portable cd player still lol.

i'd like to get one eventually tho. i'll probably be as clueless as you tho! lol.

.

The new shuffle is a bit higher in my area-around $84. This is the new square one, not the rectangular one.

I really love my iPod Nano!!! I like that it stores pictures and it also stores word files. I have all of the Disney CS menus on it, lots of Disney World tips and stuff, resort info for our favorite resorts that we want to visit... not to mention all of my songs and podcasts and pictures... and it still has a ton of space left on it. I got mine free when DH bought our Apple computer back in August. We didn't even know it was going to be free! We had originally picked up the 4GB, but when the guy was telling us "Oh and this is the rebate for the Nano..." I went back and asked for the next one up.... What ever that one is, I don't even know. I've noticed they've been going down in price lately. You might want to check out Wal-Mart. I've seen them there pretty cheap.
