I was thinking of all you Floridians last night as I watched the news and again this morning!!! Man, it's dry down there. I'm flying down a week from today, and while I certainly don't want it to rain, I can't help but hope that it does. You really need it. Be safe everyone...sorry to do this to you guys that are vacationing now, but I'm praying for some rain to happen...maybe it could rain at midnight and stop at sunup!!!

While the Volusia county fires are definitely much more severe, there have been a few fires closer to WDW. A friend of ours lives in a subdivision near the US 27 and 192 interchange in Davenport. The field behind the development was on fire the other day. They had fire crews working the area, dousing the last row of houses. There were also helicopters and airplanes dropping water onto the field.

The situation is pretty bad. I bet I could burn my back yard with a single match and I water it twice a week!

Its extremely dry all over Florida. Yet driving to work everyday I see people throwing out their butts or else they think that if they roll their window down and hold the cigarette outside their windows while driving that the inside of their car won't smell like cigarettes. WRONG, they still stink. My other pet peeve with smokers is they are ruining Florida's beautiful beaches and harming the marine life by using the sand for their ashtray. The filters do not deteriote (sp) and the tides washing over the sand pulls the butts into the ocean where the marine life ingests them. So please, I don't care if you smoke just do it responsibly other lives may depend upon it.

Thank you for bringing this up Feralpeg. I live close to where the fire is burning in New Smyrna Beach. We've seen the smoke all afternoon. The situation is very serious. Hopefully we won't have a repeat of the fires of '98. Everyone needs to be aware of the potential dangers. Let's just hope we get a significant rainfall soon.

I lived in Flagler county during those fires. From early June to early July we were under a fire watch until we finally had to evacuate during the July holiday weekend. It was a very distressing time and I don't wish that on anyone. I really ticks me off to see careless, thoughtless people tossing their cigarette butts out the window.

If any of you remember watching the news about the catastrophic wildfires here in So. Cal. in 2003, you may not know that one of the the San Bernardino County fires was reputedly started by a guy tossing a cigarette butt out the window of his van. Many, many homes burned to the ground and our mountains are mostly barren of trees in many areas and will be for years to come. So, it's definitely not something to be taken lightly, in fire season or otherwise. Unfortunately, the world is chock full of morons and most of them don't read this board.

ITA. Nothing like having the jerk in front of you throw their butt out the window and have it fly up under your car - then your whole car interior starts to smell like an ashtray. I don't think these boneheads realize that either.

When I was younger my mother's Audi stationwagon actually caught on fire from a cigarette butt. Apparently it had bounced off of the pavement and landed on a plastic piece of the undercarriage. Luckily we had pulled into a grocery store and someone else had noticed the smoke. I don't think people realize how dangerous this can be.

I would just like to add (it may have already be added I have not read the whole therd) you should always dispose of your butts properly. Butts left on the ground can be picked up by animals and when ingested are toxic.

Why do 99% of smokers think the entire world is their ashtray? It's pathetic and disgusting You can't go anywhere without easily finding cig butts all over the ground - beaches, golf courses, public parks, church parking lots, libaries, etc. You name it, some idiot smoker just tosses their crap anywhere they please. They might as well toss used toilet paper around everywhere while they are at it.

As someone who spent an entire summer in 1998 working for the USDA Forest Service fighting one of the larger fires in Florida that year, I can attest first hand to all the problems this can cause.

If you want to toss a butt somewhere, try the floorboard of your passengers seat first. What? You don't think that is a very good idea? Then why the heck is throwing it outside any better!?!?

Ain't that the truth. I can't remember the last time it rained here, and I am so waiting for it. Literally, I am waiting for it!! Right now the skies are gray and I can hear the thunder, but it has been like this all day and it still hasn't rained a drop. I remember the fires in 98, I don't think there was an area in Florida that went untouched. Here in Jacksonville there was a new fire every day. I remember the entire area near Palm Coast burning, even now when you drive by you can still see all of the burnt trees. Please, anyone living near these areas be careful.

I always thought that tossing a butt out the window was a form of littering and thought that they should be fined. I actually had one fly in my window. Just a freaky incident I guess.

just like to point out that a new fire is burring on Central florida parkway out close to sea world right now and it is blamed on a cigatette butt. it has that section of road closed now.


People are foolish for smoking not only are they poluting they're bodies and poluting nature with their butts but now they are buring it down.

If you are going to smoke please be more resposible.

We had a short thunderstorm here this morning. I spoke to my friend in Davenport and he said it was raining there. It will help, but wasn't a lot of rain.

Thunderstorms are a mixed blessing. The rain is good, but the lightening can start more fires.

Jot down the plate number, the color and/or description of the car, the time, and the place. This way if a fire starts someone can be accused.
