Please don't spoil my surprise!

We're surprising DD6 with a trip to Disney in January. We're leaving the morning after her 7th birthday. This trip has been booked since April of this year, and we've been very good about keeping it quiet. About 2 months ago I told a good friend about the trip...just couldn't hold it in any more, and I swore her to secrecy. Only 2 other people in this world (besides my dear DIS friends) know about the surprise, and these guys are notorious for keeping their mouths shut. This morning I received a phone call from one of the secret keepers. She told me that on her son's field trip yesterday (the 1st grade class DD used to be in) one of the new moms was talking to several of the kids about their upcoming trip to Disney. She then said "isn't it funny that we're going to be in Disney at the same time as the luvmy2sams family?" The secret keeper almost fell out of her seat and quickly told the new mom that it was a big secret from DD. Turns out that new mom was told by my good friend, but the good friend failed to mention that it was a secret. I've already concocted a plausible story to throw DD off track in case someone mentions this to DD, but I'm a little bummed out. We've got some great things planned, and it will be fun even if she finds out, but I hate to have it blown when we've kept the secret for so long now. Why can't some people just keep quiet?

Yeah, but I wasn't blabbing someone else's business to a virtual stranger. It's one thing if I spoil the surprise, but it's another if someone else does it for me. I told my friend that if she's blown this for me, she's going to get to pay for the trip.

Awww, I understand that you're bummed, but this is SO the kind of foot in mouth thing I would do! Your friend, I'm sure, meant no ill will, just when she found out that the other family was going immediately thought about your family going too. Then, open mouth, insert foot. Hopefully your daughter won't find out and the suprise isn't spoiled!

I feel your pain. We had planned a surprise Disney trip last year and I had only told a few people, one being DDs teacher since she would be missing one day of school. I had stressed to her teacher that it was a secret and to please not spill the beans. Well, DD went to school a day or two before our trip excited about a new loose tooth and her teacher said 'well, I know something that's going to happen soon that is much more exciting than a loose tooth but I can't tell you because it's a secret!' or something to that effect. Well, of course that got DD to wondering what was going on and she wound up figuring it out the evening before we left.

Awwww, I hope your DD doesn't find out. But you know what they say, Once you tell one person, it isn't a secret anymore. Maybe the grown ups will keep their traps shut...January sure is a long way away though. I would start spreading the word the trip is cancelled...throw everyone off track

We surprised our kids and went in this past july. After awhile it is hard keeping it a secret and we would be talking to people about it and then we would say....but we are not telling the kids...they always was happy to keep our secret and said that it was cool that we are doing that.
The kids had no clue we were going...we even packed to go on vacation and they still didn't figure out we were going to disney--they thought we were just going some place else.
They were shocked when we got to the airport and actually told them where we were going! They had to tell anyone who would listen that we surprised them...it was cute!!!!

So maybe all is not lost and your secret trip will all work out! I am hoping for you it does because my kids sure won't forget it anytime soon!

Three weeks before our surprise trip to Disneyland this past summer my Mom made a trip to see us for a weekend, I had a bad feeling she was going to spill the beans and she did. We were talking to an Aunt about our trip (DD knew about the Phoenix part, she just didn't know we were going to California as well) and my Mom says "well, you are going to California too, aren't you?". I gave her the glare to end all glares and said between clenched teeth "no, that must be someone else you are thinking of". She got the hint and dropped the subject and thankfully DD was engrossed in a book, so she missed it. I was so afraid all our months of planning had just gone out the window. Later, after the trip I asked DD about it and she said she never noticed it at all, so hopefully your trip won't be ruined for your DD as well.

I know my friend meant no harm in it, but I will give her a very hard time if DD finds out. Hopefully, since we've got fall break next week, the kids will move on to something else. I found out this afternoon that the other family is going to Disney next week...not in January as my friend had thought when she slipped...so there's no reason for the "I can't believe we'll be there at the same time" conversations at school. Fingers crossed...

DD thinks we're spending the weekend in Dallas for her birthday. We let her pick out the hotel, and she's looking forward to a weekend of Build-A-Bear, Rainforest Cafe, and the hotel swimming pool. We are spending Friday night in Dallas and will do the things she's looking forward to that night, but our plane leaves on Saturday for WDW. She's never been on a plane trip before, so that alone might blow her mind. Hopefully, the secret will remain a secret and we'll be able to do the scavenger hunt to reveal our true plans on her birthday.
