Pleasantly Surprised - Dr Who

im loving the new doctor who series (amy pond helps)
really like the knowall bumbling idiot persona that Matt Smith has (I grew up with Sylvester McCoy as the doctor so thats proberbly why)
this is the first series ive watched since Eccleston, (couldnt stand Tennant)

So I'm the only person who still likes this series then?
I've always loved the '05- onwards Doctor Who and personally, I think Matt Smith is better than David Tennant and Christopher Eccelston.

Newp, I still love it!

Is Matt Smith better than David Tennant, Chris Eccelston or in fact any other Doctor? Possibly, but I just like to think of him as...different. I like them all (well actually, wasn't keen on Colin Baker, but nyeh, details) and I've found over the years that most often the current Doctor is my favourite - until a new one comes along ;)

That said, I do really, really like what he's brought to the character. I always liked Patrick Troughton, Tom Baker and Slyvester McCoy (even though by then most the scripts were pants) because I've always thought the Doctor was best when he was slightly eccentric and a bit bonkers - and Matt Smith does that wonderfully!

I thought Saturday's episode was absolutely fantastic, I loved the genuine tension (and sad bits), the plot twists (especially the ones I didn't see coming) and the way it was linking back in to previous episodes in the series. I don't want to spoiler anything because I did see a couple of pics on the official BBC Doctor Who site that gives a hint of the finale, but it definitely looks like part 2 will have even more of the same meaning anyone who watched all the episodes so far will have a little bit extra understanding when things unfold.

Can't wait :)

Oh so is there still another episode to go? I thought last Saturdays was the last one (June 19th) :yay: :yay: I was just thinking that there was now nothing on to watch but one more episode would be great.

I really like Matt as the Dr. I watched some of the last series but was never that into it, I think maybe as I'm seeing this one from the start I'll like it better.

Also love Sylvester McCoy as I grew up with him :goodvibes

So after this finale will the new ones start in Sept/Oct or will it be a Christmas special and then new series next year? This series seemed quite short to me, I hope they make them longer in future.

Yup, 1 more to come this Saturday. I think I heard it's like 50-55 mins too (so a bit longer).

It's been 13 episodes this year - would have to check but I think that's same as normal - just seems to have whizzed by though.

Next episode is a Christmas Special then new series begins in the Spring again, I heard Matt Smith say this week they're starting filming in middle of July and that the Christmas one is 'really Christmassy' whatever that means, hehe. Another Moffat script though so hopefully will be very good :)

The doctors that I had trouble adjusting to were Peter Davison and Sylvester McCoy. I think that was because they were the first doctors that I had seen acting in something else before Dr Who. They were always Tristram and "that bloke from Vision On" to me.

Although Jon Pertwee was a well established actor before he took the part I was young enough not to have seen him before.

Oh yeah, know what you mean about Tristram *giggles* - he was quite hard for me to get used to as well because Tom Baker was 'my' Doctor. Took a while but thought he was pretty good in the end and I wouldn't have minded if he'd stuck around for longer really.

By the way, dunno if anyone has noticed but the last episode that airs on Saturday, that's 26th June 2010...which is the date that Rory and Amy are supposed to get married and the date the Tardis creates the cracks. I thought that was kinda neat that they tied that all up together with the day the show actually airs - I'm a sucker for that sort of gimmick.

About which Doctor's the best.. well, as I'm only 15, I've only seen the '05-onwards series but Matt Smith is definitely my favourite Doctor. I was worried the show would go downhill when David Tennant left but it's got better instead. :goodvibes.

Well after saying I had lost interest in Dr. Who, I caught up with the first part of the finale on IPlayer this week, and really enjoyed the final episode tonight :)

the writing on this series is so much better than the Russell T Davies led ones,
theres been a few duff episodes (welsh one and the ww2 one springs to mind.)
Some of the 2 parters this series could easily been films with a bit of tweaking (weeping angels and the finale)

Scratch that, the ww2 episode was great untill the 'bomb'

I think this season's 2 part finale was top, top, quality. Last weeks was all action, tension and suspense - this weeks was the brain food explaining everything. I thought it was perfectly balanced and loved it.

Love Matt Smith more than ever, he has such an expressive face (and Fezzes are cool, LOL!) and in the scene near the end with young Amelia he somehow managed to appear all of his 900+ years old, fab acting. Can't say he looked too bad in a Tux either ;)

I agree it had a few wobbly episodes (didn't mind the welsh one too much but the 2nd one (Beast Below) and the WW2 one after the big reveal about 15 mins in didn't really do it for me) but mid season was ok, and Vincent and the Doctor onwards has had me glued.

So happy to see Rory become a companion too! Hope he sticks around for more than the Christmas one.

I did enjoy RTD's work for the most part and definitely enjoyed his previous finales, but I love the more thoughtful direction this series has taken - you really have to pay attention to the script to understand what's happening else you miss half the story. It's not about impressing us with 1,000's of Daleks and Cyberman whizzing around the skies, it's about making just 1 or 2 of them scary again. I like that.
