DSs (age 9 and 7) have decided they want to ask for a video game system for Christmas. Anyone have any insight on the differences between PlayStation 2 and GameCube? From what I can tell, PlayStation 2 has more games (and more Disney titles) than GameCube but outside of that, I'm not sure what the difference is?

Thanks!

We have Gamecube and I am seriously thinking about getting PS2 because there are a lot more games.

I'm with Aahmom on this one. I have a GameCube and an X-Box and it seems like PS2 has all the best games, especially the new Disney one.

It could also be a grass is always greener kind of thing, but I really do think that PS2 has a LOT more games available.

Well, isn't this just the right topic for a newly hired BABBAGE'S associate?? :p With no doubt the PS2 does have more games and it's an overall better system. My DH owns that and a Dreamcast and he plays the PS2 a lot more. Yes the games may cost a little more, but all in all it's just the better system with some many games out there. You can still buy PS1 games and play them on the PS2, but you can't do the reverse, buy PS2 games and play them on the PS1. Remember that when buying the system.

Any other questions, just drop me a buzz! :jester:

We just got our DS (7) a Game Cube for his birthday and he loves it. He has Monsters, Inc., Star Wars, Spiderman, and Pikmin. The Monsters game is great because he can play with his brother at the same time and they just love it. PS2 may have more games, but did you ever investigate the type of games they have? Mostly sports and Teen and Mature games. Game Cube has more games geared towards kids. Also, my 10 year old nephew has PS2 and once he played Game Cube, he now wants one and wishes he would've got it instead.
Also, IMHO, the controller for Game Cube fits a smaller hand better.

They are both fine systems and I'm sure you'll be happy with either one!!

Tom...

I just broke down and got DS a PS2. We only have one game for it right now...Kingdom Hearts. It's really pretty neat. It has a lot of Disney characters.

TC:cool:

PS2 does have a lot more games but it's likely only because it's been out for so much longer than the Gamecube. DS has a Gamecube and he has definitely enjoyed it. PS2 may just be next though. :)

Yep, you will eventually wind up with both.:p We bought GC last Christmas and this year we will get the PS2.

BTW get StarFox Adventures if you get GC. So far I think that is the best game they put out so far, jmho.;)

DS, who has a GameCube, PS1 and Nintendo64, is getting a PS2 for his birthday just so he can play Kingdom Hearts. He is foregoing a birthday party for that BTW.

I refurbish games for EB, and i do know alitle about popularity, and PS2 wins hands down! I also know we have cleared more shelf space for PS2 games, and none for GC, so that tells me which system will have lots of new stuff to buy for the holiday. Also, PS2 is for the more experienced player, GC is great for the younger player though!

PS2 does have more games, but GameCube has more games geared towards kids.
My boys have GC and they love it. We are getting them a PS2 for Christmas! :)

Thanks for the input everyone! As the budget won't allow for GC and PS2, it looks like PS2 will be under the tree Christmas Day (I really want to see Kingdom Hearts on it as well). Thanks!

This is compared to all three (PS2, GameCube, XBox)

Pro's for PS2:

It has more games
More companies are developing for it.
There's more Disney Games

Con's for PS2:

It's more expensive than a GameCube
Graphics are not as good.
Games are more expensive than GameCube
Controllers IMO are very confusing

Pro's for XBox:
High end graphics.
Promising when it comes to it's games.
XBox Live feature

Con's for Xbox:
HUGE controllers
Expensive
Hardly any games
It's Microsoft
Less re-playability factor. (most games are quick to beat)
Losing money with each system built so we don't know how long they will keep it alive

Pro's for GameCube:
High end graphics
More games than Xbox (rate of game growth is far greater than PS2)
Cheapest system there.
Resilient games (harder to break than Xbox or PS2)
Wide Selection of games
Nintendo has been the longest brand out there when it comes to consoles
Plenty of characters to draw upon good games from.
Most portable (to take to a friend - it even has a handle)

Con's for GameCube
Games currently seem to be geared only to 7-15 range (they are working on this with their new releases)
Network adapter not highly available for network play
Graphics aren't as good as XboX (but no games can quite get to the point to outperform the GameCube yet)
Controllers feel cheap (although I have yet to break mine - and I have dropped them and stepped on the occasionally)

Hope this helps.
