Playstation 2 help please?

I live in the UK. There is a PS2 game which is only avalable in the USA ( at present) which my daughter would like for Xmas. If I buy in the USA would it play okay on our TVs /monitors over here?
I know it sounds a stupid question but I just wondered if the NTSC stuff was appropriate with the PS2 stuff also.
Any advice would be much appreciated. Thanks in advance.

My BIL who lives in London brought us his old PS2 games and we couldn't use them here because they are not compatible.

Out of the box this won't work. If you chip the console (open it up and diddle around with certain components) then it will work, but this is *not* recommended.

Thank you both for your replies. It would have been awful to have got her the much desired game only for it not to have worked..so near and yet so far etc!
