Does anyone know if there is a penalty for returning a rental car early? I've been playing with times for the rental car and it seems to be cheaper if I put in that I want to keep the car longer than I actually can use it. Any input would be appreciated.

Thanks!

Not a penalty exactly, but if you return it early, they do not have to honor your contracted rate (or discount or coupon) that you had since you are in effect breaking the agreement. So it can and will likely cost you more.

It's a gamble. You may come out ahead and not be charged or you may lose and be charged a higher rate.

Only take the gamble if you can afford to and are willing to lose.

I agree it does seem crazy, but that is the way the system works.
I not sure what the limits are when dropping off early, I have never tested it.
My recommendation would be to call the rental company and ask for there policy and see if they can help you out.
They could charge you extra for dropping off early, because you didn't abide by the the rental agreement.

Just called Dollar because our flights changed and we're dropping the car off 6 hours earlier. The agent said that will be $800 +, I had it booked for $321. I told him to hold on and he said I can adjust the time and honor the $321. While he was processing it we were disconnected.....DH said they're scamming you!! I called back and spoke to another agent and confirmed that the time was changed and it's only $263!!!! Bottom line call Dollar they're great.
