There are some trivia games you can play outside the parks.

So I'm actually in the same boat. I've found that the trivia works and so does the music function, but everything else seems to be location base since the bulk of the app is focused on achievements for going to the locations around the parks. Still, I'm looking forward to Playing when we go in October.

I did all of the trivia spots before going to the parks, but I had to do them again when I was in the parks to get the achievement badge to unlock.
