Platinum or White Gold?

I love platnuim engagement rings. They look better and the setting is MOST durable.

You are very fortunate, as most white gold will tend to yellow. White gold is a mix of pure gold with copper, silver and either nickel or palladium. These days, most white gold is rhodium treated. Rhodium is a hard and durable metal often used on white gold to emphasize the white color. Chlorine is especially hard on white gold, and in some cases, can even turn white gold black!
I learn something new everyday here. I did not know this. Thanks for the info. :teeth:

I have both (and wear them as a set!) and you'd never know a difference.

The engagement ring is platinum (solitare) but $ was tight and we did a white gold wedding band (which is actually a wrap thing). We just celebrated 4 years and if I flip the rings around and look at the band very carefully, I can tell a difference. The white gold does have a yellower tint now but you have to put it side by side and compare it.

No one has ever known the difference and really, the diamonds cover the top of my finger so I would have to flip my hand around for them to really even see the metal.

Platinum is the best, IMO, but it comes with a big price tag. I have had no issues with having both and would have happily done white gold in order to have a better quality diamond.

I love my platinum rings.

Re the better bigger diamond vs setting issue I think one thing to factor in is that platinum will "slightly" increase the whiteness of a diamond (by not being as high contrast as yellow or incremently white gold).

This could mean if you have a great cut, decent carat and clairty but you could shave a pinch off the colour.

My rings were my grandmothers though and I would love them even if the diamond wasn't a good one. (the setting however is more old fashioned not as "bling" as is the current mode as it's set down instead of up on the ring).

since the rings been in daily use since 45 & I still get compliments on it I guess it's all in picking what you think suits you.

So I just tried on a bunch of rings and ended up not liking some of the stuff I thought I would. The sales woman was telling me that she thinks the 3 stone settings are more for anniversary (past, present, future).

I ended up falling in love with something similar to this (white gold though):

The band is slightly thinner though.

Buying jewelry is like buying a car (I was warned in that one link). I put a $10 deposit on it to hold the price. Got distracted by something going on the store and didn't realize I had signed no cancellations. ooops. My boyfried is hesitant about buying it from the mall. Would I just lose the deposit? Or will they come after me for the $$$ if he decides to go elsewhere. I feel so dumb now lol. I should have never gone alone lol.

I would still have him look around.

Losing the $10 is nothing compared to buying a ring you really don't want because of a no-cancellation clause.

My ring is a center emerald cut diamond with 2 horizontal baguettes and 1 vertical baguette on either side. I absolutely love it.

I had my engagement ring re-worked many times. My first was white gold with a 1ct marquis center stone and nothing else. The white gold was a pain to keep clean and, after a few months, just looked blah. So, we found a new setting. This one is platinum with 3 diamonds down each side of the center stone.

I loved the marquis at first, but it kept getting knocked out of the setting. It wasn't going to fall out, but the points kept being dislodged. So, I traded it in for a 2ct princess cut (I had to make up the difference in price, but it was worth it). Now, it stays in place.

Then, we had the band made to match the setting. It's also platinum and it has 7 diamonds along the top. They cut it in so it fits with the engagement part of the set.

I think I'm done fiddling with it now. :rotfl:

You're going to be staring at this thing every day for the rest of your life. Make sure you like it. ;)

I really love the ring and the matching band. It's smaller than what I originally wanted, but I didn't like the bigger stones. This ring looked nice and dainty and I liked the look better on my hand.

Your ring sounds exactly like one of my co-workers. Very pretty.

Although now I think I may go over there today and see about switching the round stones in the setting to princess cut. :)
