I have plantar fasciitis. I found this out on our last trip to WDW when after day 2 I could hardly walk because of the heel pain. If you have this what kind of shoes do you wear(especially at the parks)? I recently bought a pair of birkenstocks and they have helped some, but am looking for other alternatives. I am hoping that with the right type of shoe and the fact that I am currently working on losing weight that this may subside some.

Ecco's - I have their sneakers & sandals. Most important thing is to stretch!

I was officially diagnosed with it last month. It's been much better with the podiatrist's help.

Here's what worked for me, but everyone is different
*Cortisone (unfortunately, I'm allergic to it, but the four days of pills helped). The shots hurt but work well.
*Took a water bottle, filled it with water and froze it. Iced my foot with it five times a day, 20 minutes at a time.
*paraffin dips twice a week.
*the butt ugly crocs are a huge help.

I go pick up my orthotics on wednesday. I had a week of being off my feet, due to vascular surgery and that was a huge help. If you google 'plantar fasciitis', you'll find several really helpful websites.

My mom is suffering with this right now. She did the wrap, the shot, and is now doing the boot thing. wears it all the time. Some docs say at night, but her podiatrist said all the time so that is what she is doing. She said it really feels sooo much better. She has been in the boot almost 4 weeks!
Ask about the immobilization boot.

Good luck.

Have you been to a podiatrist yet? I wear orthodic inserts in my shoes and have had a couple of cortisone shots. I also have the boot to wear at night. I've also gone through several weeks of the therapy sessions. I've had a terrrible time on and off for the last year, but I think I'm finally getting things under control. So what helped me?

  • Stop walking around barefoot!
  • Stretch my feet DAILY - especially first thing in the morning before stepping out of bed
  • Birkenstock Sandals for my "barefoot days"
  • Ibuprofen to reduce swelling

I'm also working on losing weight I've noticed my pain to be worse since I've gained weight. Good luck to you!

I developed Plantar Fasciitis when I decided to power walk on the track! I have to be on my feet all day at work, and the podiatrist and I tackled it BIG TIME!

Do not buy special, expensive shoes, like Nike Whatever. Buy a comfy, plain kind of shoe...Reebok Princess works very well.

Get the inserts if you have foot problems that need to be corrected. They make cheapo ones for $45 or so that may very well help. If they don't, you can get them custom made for about $300. (And it feels Oh-so-good when they rub that wet plaster on your feet, then stick your feet in a whirlpool.)

Do the stretches! Do the stretches! Do the stretches! Especially before you get out of bed.

If you find that you're gaining weight because you can't exercise, SWIM! Do not, after a couple months of no pain, decide that your foot is fine and go back to doing Denise Austin exercises. I speak from experience here! You set yourself all the way back.

It takes 10-12 months to heal itself, and the only way to do that is to stop re-injuring it. When you get up in the morning, and it isn't hurting, you'll know recovery has begun!

When I first developed it, I had to take a pill to relieve the inflammation (it was also a very mild pain-killer). But after about 3 months, I switched to OTC stuff, and now take nothing.

I've got three more months before I'm done with this wretched business, and I feel your pain! :)

do a search, there have been lots and lots of threads! There are lots of us out there that suffer from this. I have done all of the above mentioned things. The thing that really helped me the most was when I went on Daypro for my OA. It also made my feet stop hurting!

No more walking around barefoot. Ever. Sorry :guilty:

Stretches. I hang my feet over a step and stretch.

Crocs for around the house. Dansko or Sanita brand shoes for out of the house. They are lots of $$$, but have made a big difference for me. I have also heard good things about Ecco.

Also, I have to lose weight. Period. I know just losing 5 or 6 pounds has helped my degree of pain.

Good luck.

go to heelthatpain.com. They have these inserts for your shoes. I had PF last year and my feet hurt so bad. I could hardly walk when I got out of bed in the morning. Someone told me about this website. They weren't expensive, so I figured I would try. They worked! I still wear them in my shoes.

You have to start slowly with them. I learned the hard way. They are designed so they stretch the fascia and if you wear them too long at first, your feet will hurt more. Once I started wearing them a little at a time, they worked.

No more foot pain.

I didn't want to go to a podiatrist, but that was where I was headed.

Good luck!

STRETCH!!!! And when you think you stretched enough,STRETCH some more!!

I have this too! I hate it. It went away when I lost weight, now it is back. Ughhhh!!! I cannot wear Crocs, they make it much much worse for me. I wear shoes with good arch support, all the time.

I took someone's heelthatpain suggestion here too and found the inserts helpful.

Ice, stretching, resting your feet, shoes at all times - very important.

I don't wear crocs for much walking - I need more support for that - but I wear them as house slippers. I literally keep them by my bed and put them on if I am so much as going to the bathroom. When it was really bad I even wore them in the shower.

I had this a few years ago and it was really bad at Disneyland and WDW. The doctor suggested the frozen water bottle and inserts. I bought som $60 inserts and wore them daily for a few months and it slowly went away. I still buy new inserts each year and wear them most of the time. It has not returned.
