"Plans call for two Panamax-sized ships"

While I know nothing of what kind of ships they would build, I have a tendancy to think that they would expand their fleet. The cruise industry is big and Disney is pretty successful at it, so I would think it was logical.

It will be fun watching for it. :)

when we were on in June - the captian did say that they had plans already for the new ship but the building process was still on hold for an upturn in the global economy.

What I found interesting in the article is that, according to "word on the street," plans call for two ships.

The rumors on this board have normally mentioned a "third ship," not a third and fourth ship.

Reports say that the economy is turning around. Are you listening Disney? Build those ships !

I would say yes, they are going to build two ships...according to the Captain on our last cruise. launching from CA...with 3/4 and 7 day itineraries. Just don't expect to see them for 3/4 years.

We can't wait!

From day 1 of DCL they have said they wanted a fleet of 7-9 ships over the years. I don't find it hard to believe that they want to expand....I feel they are just waiting for the right time.

We heard the same thing as Windermere when we cruised in May. Just waiting for the Euro to get to a good exchange rate and they would be ready. You can be sure that at least one of the new ships will also be designed to sail in Alaska. That means more covered areas (like maybe the sliding roof over the pool.

Can't wait to see the plans when they release them.

We were on the Wonder (Sept 25) and the captain told the castaway club members that the new ship will be called the Disney Rumor, because thats what it really is at this point. He did say they would expand their fleet at some point, but nothing was in the works now.

We were on this same cruise and during the bridge tour the question was asked about a new ship. There were three ppl down on the bridge, two in the front, and the middle guy back about 3 paces. The back guy started shaking his head "yes, yes, yes, yes" while the other two shook their head no and gave what I though, IMHO, was a canned Disney answer saying there were no plans at this time to build another ship yada yada.

The guy in the middle's reaction though gave me hope that there ARE plans to build another ship and I'm thinking maybe he missed the meeting where they told cast members not to say anything. ;)

According to one fairly official article, which was posted here recently....

Disney is looking at building new ship(s)... It is not the economy (our economy) in general that is slowing it down... They are getting price quotes from shipyards, which are in Italy (Europe)... And right now the exchange rate is very unfavorable. (thus the phrase 'global' economy....) This is what they are waiting to turn around... Which does not seem to be probable in the near future???

Other than that, supposedly, the plans have been made, and price quotes are in the works, etc.....

This sounded official, and while, of course, no details are mentioned... I suspect that this may be where DCL is at right now in the process of adding new ships/itenerarys???

I think this is a great point by OhioMinnie. Disney tends to attempt to remain quite on projects that are in the works even when it become obvious of what they are. Take this "little" baby as an example:

Also, the quote about Disney not making any major capital expenditures is, in my opinion, very misleading. Disney has announced that it will spend $90 to $100 million on Expedition Everest alone. That doesn't account for the Soarin (probably a min. of $40 million, the Stitch rehab, and the stunt show.) For a company the size of WDC, $450 to $500 million for a new ship (or two) is probably not much of a capital expenditure. I think when Disney states "capital expenditures" they're speaking along the lines of no more $19 billion dollar acquisitions. (Think ABC/Capital Cities.)
