This is my first holiday trip to Disneyland. I have done the Candlelight Processional several times at WDW. I know they only do it a couple of nights at Disneyland. Is it truly worth it? It seems the park is jam packed around the main train station and I've heard it's hard to get seats. Opinions?

I really enjoy Candlelight at DIsneyland. It is very crowded around the train station, people start lining up at opening.

It is incredibly unlikely that you will get even a halfway decent view of the show, and for the crappy view you will need to wait hours. Meanwhile, traffic on Main Street grinds to a halt.

If you are going during CP weekend, you need to either devote one entire day to seeing CP and not doing anything else, or you need to have a really good plan to avoid the main gates from about 3:00 to 9:00. Getting in and out by monorail works, as does spending the entire afternoon and evening at DCA.

I planned on arriving in California that weekend. I was debating a couple days in Hollywood/Universal. So I think that will be the plan and not get to DLR until Sunday or Monday.

Candlelight does not necessarily mean that Disneyland is crowded, just the entrance area. Folks who are there for candlelight are not going to be elsewhere inthe park but hanging out on Main street in relationship to what CMS allow. DCA is always avable for Saturday. As for crowds, 2016 became the barometer that it will be crowded for the holidays forever, regardless of closures, weather, extra week, election, etc, it will just be crowded!!!

I watched CP in 2015 and this wasn't my experience at all. Granted, the parks are always getting more crowded so 2016 might have been worse than 2015, and 2017 might be worse still. In 2015 we watched the second showing of the evening under the assumption that it would be less crowded than the first, like with parades. We arrived in the waiting area in the middle of the first performance, so I think we only waited about an hour or two (I don't remember how much gap there is between shows, but it didn't seem too long). We were toward the front of the line and we got a spot right behind the benches so we had an unobstructed view. Luck may have been on our side, but even so I don't think you need to devote an entire day unless you want a bench seat. Otherwise you can spend the morning and afternoon doing whatever you want and arrive in the evening. I also recall that there were at least a couple operating hours after the processional was over, because I remember stopping for a leisurely dinner and still having time for all of Fantasyland that night.

That said, you asked if it's worth it, and I'm not sure. It was nice. It certainly wasn't an all-day commitment, but it was a few hours which is a lot if you only have a couple days in the parks. I think it was worth it for us because we had AP's that year so we weren't worried about losing the park time. If you really like Christmas, or if you have enough extra time built into the trip that you won't have to cut any attractions to make time for it, then it's a nice way to spend an evening.

We love CP and go almost every year. As stated above, we've never waited more than a few hours and have usually had decent viewing. We've never waited for the second show, but have heard from friends that the wait usually is shorter than it is for the first show.

How long did you wait and where were you that you considered it a crappy view? Was it first or second show?

Traffic does get slowed significantly, however, if you follow CM instructions, you will move faster. They open the back routes so it flows faster. Main St will be blocked from 525p-535 while the choir comes down the street. Beautiful to watch.

We were there this year and it seemed to us that there were no good spots left by at least 2:00. Would it have been possible to squeeze in somewhere? Sure, probably, but I did not see anything like prime viewing spots. The parade messes things up as well. It appeared to me (though I didn't observe carefully all day to prove it) that the people with the best spots were the ones who grabbed them and held them through the parades and into evening. Everything else was leftovers behind rows of people and rows of children on shoulders.

Perhaps I just have excessive expectations about it because I remember seeing it in the 1990s, when we waited for less than two hours and got seats near the front. If you just want to listen to the music and see the singers up high in the tree or the trumpeters on the train station roof or the lighting effects, you'll be able to see it. Heck, you can even get a partial experience by trying to leave the park, as it will take you at least 20 minutes so you get to hear a decent chunk of the show. But if your goal is to see the stage and narrator, it will take a serious commitment of time.

Also, when we tried to exit during the show, neither Main Street bypass was open. Everyone had to squeeze down a narrow part of the sidewalk on the west side of Main Street. If not for the lovely music, it would have been excruciating.

....and if it is a bucket list item, then watch the trumpeters outside on the plaza, that is how I checked that event off my list

Just booked flights for Dec. 1-4. We have seen CP in WDW. Not sure how to deal with the crowds. Is it standing room only?

It's not a public event at DLR. It's a private invite-only event that happens to be held where the public can see it. So while there may be some benches with a view, it's basically standing only with heavy crowd control in effect.

This last year, we arrived at the start of the second showing, walked around until we found a good place to stand. We had a great view of the event, and had a great view of the podium and Ginnifer Goodwin.

There are benches around Town Square that are available, but they are usually staked out quite early. The seating areas are usually invited guests.

We unwittingly went during the CP weekend in 2012. It was by far my worst trip ever. You couldn't even walk Main Street it was so packed. AVOID AVOID AVOID!

Wasn't 2012 the year that they did it for a month and made it open to the public? It won't be like that this year.
