Planking?

I'm so surprised I haven't seen a thread about this yet! PLANKING... the new trend. It's all over Facebook, either in photos of people doing it or somebody's status complaining about how stupid it is.

Stupid... funny... a mix of both...?

Just in case anybody doesn't know what this new phenomenon is, according to Wikipedia it is "an activity consisting of lying face down in an unusual or incongruous location. The hands must touch the sides of the body and having a photograph of the participant taken and posted on the Internet is an integral part of the game. Players compete to find the most unusual and original location in which to play."

I find it funny when the location is creative. However, I know that there have been some who have taken too far... A man in Australia was planking off a seven story balcony and fell and died.

So yes, when it's dangerous I don't find it funny... when it's creative and harmless, I do.

I think planking is idiotic. People are dying to one up each other. It's nothing new either. It was very common during the African slave trade when slaves where stacked on planks in slave ships. What fun

Granted, some of the people doing this are idiots who take it to the extreme, but likening it to the transportation methods and practices of the slave trade? That's quite a stretch.

I think its dumb but it doesnt bother me if no one gets hurt. I did block some people on facebook that were doing it. They were on the verge of being blocked anyway

A lot of the pictures are funny and MOST of them are just having fun--nothing too idiotic (and don't a lot of people do idiotic things in the name of "fun"?). There are always a few who takes thing too far but that doesn't seem to be the vast majority.

And, I agree, some people need to seriously lighten up! Maybe they need to try it and have some fun!!

Why was planking the thing that put them over the "blocking" top? Were they doing something dangerous?

My first reaction to seeing someone like this would be OMG they are hurt/dead!!!!

I don't think its funny. Especially the person mixed in with all the garbage bags. That honestly would freak me out.

Planking has been put into the spotlight recently by some Rap stars for its comparison with the "stacking" or "planking" of African American slaves en route to the US. I personally do not see the relation, except for the name.

Personally, I love extreme ironing! That seems like a blast, until someone burns themselves and then their will be a public outcry!

You know.....I'd be hardpressed to ever take a rapper seriously or give what they say any credence whatsoever. Ridiculous statements such as this are a major reason why. That is one seriously tenuous streeeeeeeeeetch.

It wasnt really the planking. It was posting a huge(slight exageration) amount of pics of planking and clogging my newsfeed. Also one guy changed his name to something i found embarrasing everytime i saw it

Yes, somebody did die in Australia from planking. But if you drink until you are plastered and then try to lie on a thin SAFETY railing around your balcony room - well I think he just qualified for the Darwin awards.

The other dumb ones were where they posed on mine equipment, on a mine site during shift and the posted their images on Facebook / YouTube. Aussie mining companies have a zero tolerance policy on safety breaches and if you are posing on a HaulPack 20 feet in the air - instant dismissal with no comeback, never to be employed in the mining industry.
