Plane Worries?

I see my post bothered you enough that you felt the need to report it. Not surprising. I appreciate your clarification on your stance regarding DEI and merit-based promotion. However, the issue with framing DEI as “improperly executed” or implying that it inherently reduces quality is that it often misrepresents its actual purpose and impact. The goal of DEI is not to undermine qualifications but to ensure that opportunities are accessible to a broader and historically underrepresented talent pool.

Regarding Boeing and corporate shifts in DEI, it’s worth critically evaluating whether changes are truly about improving quality or if they stem from external pressures, legal challenges, or political influences. A well-implemented DEI strategy doesn’t mean sacrificing excellence—it means expanding access to talent while maintaining rigorous standards.
I did not report your post.
Stay well.

Flew into Palm Springs over the weekend. Delta Airbus. Uneventful flight... until we land. We touch down for about 3 seconds and the plane felt a little like it was rocking side to side.. and then we take off again. Guy behind me is recording and says "oh shi$$ guys we just landed and took off again, this cant be good" My son (9) starts throwing up. Several minutes goes by and the pilot has said nothing.... pretty terrifying.

Pilot finally tells us there was too much head wind. We circle the airport several times and finally land safely.

Go arounds are not necessarily bad, and often times can be good.

It's very possible they/you caught a gusting headwind and the safer maneuver was to do a go around. Or someone/something had crossed onto the runway (just crossing the "hold short" line means you're "on the runway", even if you are completely 'off' if that makes sense).

Very happy the pilot had the knowledge and skill to do what he did, Im sure he had good reason, was just very unexpected and scary

The problem is that news only reports things that go bad not the normal situations that happen. Aborting landing are pretty common and nothing do be concerned about. The person behind you didn't know anything he was talking about.

I was in a plane leaving Orlando that got struck by lightning because your in a giant metal tube you don't feel anything it just a saw a flash of light. The pilot came on right after, I can't remember the exact quote but it had something to do with not being Delta's version of Tower or Terror. He also said coming out of Orlando it does happen and there's absolutely nothing to worry about.

Just trying to point out while "out of the ordinary", it's not an strange maneuver and shouldn't really be "scary". Trying to allay your fears in case it ever happens to you again.
Yes thank you, it does help, especially since we are flying again just next week for WDW.

When we got to our family's house and told them they told us how common that is at Palm Springs airport, I guess where it sits makes it very windy all the time. Makes sense why they have thousands of windmills there

Im sure his followers got a kick out of it. Then the sound of my son throwing up probably made it even more entertaining. 😂 It's funny while waiting to board the plane we were talking about Mission Space and if my husband could handle that ride, my son was certain he could fly orange no problem. Once we got off the plane he said "maybe I will try to fly blue mom"

That guy is an idiot. Concur with PP, they’re unusual but not super rare. I’ve had go arounds at LAX and MCO, don’t recall any pilot communication either time.
Pilot communication can be rare during a go around. It’s a very busy time for the flight crew, not only handling the go around, but resetting for the next approach.
We do try to alleviate fears for the passengers, but of course safely flying the airplane is our priority.

Personally, I do give an explanation once we are on the ground before deplaning.

I was in a go around coming into MCO a couple years ago. Pilot came on and said there was a plane on the runway that didn’t clear. Years ago I was coming into Atlanta and we almost touched down and suddenly went straight up. Again, a plane was on the runway. I didn’t see it but another passenger told me we flew over the plane sitting on the runway. After we leveled off over Downtown Atlanta, the pilot did come on and explained. I used to fly a lot for work, I have no fear of flying even after these events. Just got home, 2 uneventful flights on Southwest.

My brother is a pilot and shared this with me....

The NTSB investigates aviation, highway, railroad, marine, pipeline, and hazardous materials accidents, as well as certain commercial space incidents.

Almost all media is owned by 5 people at the top and ultimately they are controlled by a single group. Their goal is not to inform you, but instead persuade you, distract you and tell you how to think. Try not to let everything that happens in the news scare you or cause you to overthink.

This. 1000%. Imagine if people shut off their TVs and news apps and just lived their lives....how much happier would they be? How much less stress?

It has always been said and still holds true, you have a greater chance of dying in your car than by a plane. I believe I read at one point that almost 150K people are taken to the ER each year for being hit by another vehicle as a pedestrian. Odds are greater for one to be hit checking their mailbox or walking through the Costco parking lot than dying in a plane crash.

The statistic I like to quote is that you are more likely to die in an auto accident on your way to the airport than you are in a plane crash.

Not overly concerned, but when I had to book a flight with a connection (I avoid that if at all possible, but for Madison, WI there wasn't a choice) I did purposely NOT book a connection through DCA.

I used to live in NoVA and am quite familiar with DCA and it's shorter runways, weird take off and landing patterns/requirements, etc. So honestly I'm surprised something like the tragic collision that happened hasn't before now.

Had a flight out of MCO yesterday on Delta couple hours after an engine caught fire on a delta plane at MCO. I don’t fly super often but 2 times in the last year something pretty major has happened on an another Delta flight while I was flying Delta that day. So personally I now feel like these things are happening more than they used too.

I'm really not trying to be dismissive but the reason you feel like these things are happening more often than they used to is precisely because you don't fly super often. More than 45,000 flights a day are handled by the FAA, not including commercial air traffic initiated by other countries. The odds are still exceedingly low for major incidents. https://www.faa.gov/air_traffic/by_the_numbers

In fact there's actually been fewer incidents this year than this time last year, there's just been way more media attention being paid to them. As folks keep saying in this thread.
