Hi, I know if the seatbelt doesnot fit, is there a rough weight where they say you have to buy another seat? My DH is not to to big(280ish)but I want him to lose weight before our cruise next Nov 2011, this just could ne the trigger to get him going.

Hmmm, no, I don't think it's really a WEIGHT thing (unless it was an obvious weight that would not fit in an airline seat) as much as it is the GIRTH. Plus it all depends on the airline.

That said, I wouldn't want to deter you from anything that you think could help your DH reach a more healthy weight. 280 doesn't sound HUGE, just like a big guy, so honestly he would probably FIT...but not be comfortable...in a regular seat.

It would be really helpful to find out the seat pitch of whatever airline you plan to travel with.

Some seats have an extra one to 2 inches (bulkhead, exit seats, 1st class)

They do offer extenders onboard as well.

I would contact the airline to see how far in advance you can select your seats, for both legs of your flight. The earlier the better.

Not a weight, but a size, thing. DH is more than that weight at 5'10", and he's never had to get another seat. He's needed belt extenders (though the list of airlines and airplanes where he needs them is getting smaller all the time!) but even then, no extra seat.

Of course, it's a good goal to lose weight, anyway! :) Especially for a cruise where you'll have umpteen million picture-taking opportunities. It's no fun to not buy ANY pictures simply because you're too grossed out with how you look.

And there might be some excursions he'll be limited to at 280...horseback riding seemed to stop at 250, when we were planning our cruise. And if there's a zip line, they might have a limit. You could look into those things, for one to motivate him, but more importantly (to me), for two, to make sure he knows these things in advance so as not to be embarrassed. Oh, helicopter tour excursions as well. We went to Alaska so there were several we could choose from, and they all said that weight balance was important. DH opted out b/c of weight worries...I opted out because of crashing into the ocean or glacier worries. ;)

OT: But OP I know someone (I went to school with him!) from Paris Ontario and got excited to see where you are from!

I know two people who are well over that weight who have never been asked to get a 2nd seat, unless you DH has an unusual body type, he should be fine. Usually as long as you aren't "spilling" out of your seat and into the seat next to you, you'll be fine. Also the arm rest must be able to be all the way down (I think that's an FAA thing). Airlines do have seat bealt extenders too, so don't wory about fitting in the seat but not being able to buckle.

If you really want to, you could just go ahead and purchase an extra seat when you buy your tickets. You could leave the seat between you empty and then not only will you have the row to yourself and be a bit more comfortable, you won't have to worry about having to do it at the airport should it be necessary (though I doubt it would be).
