Placeholder Discount Increased to 30% Off Select Sailings

So is this using a placeholder to get 30% total off a regular room rate or can this be used on a GTY rate ? Doesn’t make sense to me to waste a placeholder on a regular rate room when I’m guessing it’s relatively the same rate as the GTY ( I’m guessing that’s the case ).
I guess you do get to pick your room though
I applied this promotion to an existing reservation (4 people - veranda) and it ended up $45.20 cheaper than the guaranteed w/restrictions rate (so essentially the same as the VGT rate). It is likely not worth using a placeholder to save $45 (and pick room) on a new booking, but in my case where I already used a placeholder 12 months ago it was worth calling in and getting over $1,000 refunded.

Disney has increased supply of ships. Of course prices must fall as they need to find more passengers to fill them.
and the economy is filled with trepidation because of:
- revenge travel being over
- tariffs
- a tax bill expiring at the end of the year that potentially raises everyone's taxes
- several years of high inflation still working its way out of the system
- higher interest rates

We are seeing discounts throughout the travel sector across the board...

Disney has also gotten very aggressive with pricing on DCL. I think we are likely to see DCL move to a WDW style pricing strategy where they charge high when you book far out and then they discount closer in to fill seats. Eventually I could see a RCCL style dynamic pricing, but they aren't there yet.

They clearly have some pretty empty ships to fill in August & September!! To be fair this is ALWAYS the slowest & cheapest time of year for them- but obviously its even slower than normal this year.

Some portion of that may be driven by people waiting and going on the Destiny in Nov and/or Adventure in Dec instead of booking a Wish cruise in Aug/Sept.
Their cruises are so overpriced this just makes competitive.

You forgot WW3.

The list only shows 3 dates for the dream, but I found 2 other dates that are on special. I wonder if they are included for the 250 credit.

When the Dream and Fantasy came out, there were awesome deals on the Magic/Wonder and we took advantage of it often! We finally got around to the Dream/Fantasy when prices settled down. The reason I’ve done so many cruises is that I don’t pay a lot for them and wait out the pricing.I was appaled that I saw someone paid $6000 for 2 adults/1 kid for 3 nights on the Wish or Treasure, I dan’t remember. I was shell shocked. For 2 adults in OV, we paid $2300 for our 7n nt Magic trip from Galveston to PR and we are paying $3500 for our 10 day Vancouver-Hawaii trip. We just got a $1000 back from our Hawaii trip just before PIF.

Unlikely it was the Treasure- since it only does 7-night cruises. (There were a total of 2 3-night cruises in Dec 2024 shortly after the Maiden Voyage but that is it.)

Umm... how much trouble do we think DCL is in this fall that it is offering this, all the *GT rates, and the $250 onboard credit for Disney Visa/DVC?

I agree ... it's not just DCL in trouble, but travel industry as a whole. I know a few people that have lost their jobs in the last 3 months, and I know a few more that are anticipating that happening soon, so none of them are making expensive travel plans. The ripple effects of increasing unemployment and people spending more cautiously mean even those in safer industries are hesitant to spend a lot on travel. I don't know that I'd be taking the summer trip I'm doing this year had we not already booked and paid for much of it back in the fall. So yeah, I think we're just seeing the tip of the iceberg with discounts becoming bigger and more frequent.

Disney has done a travel deals during rough economic times before and I suspect we will see them now. I specifically remember a buy 4 get 3 days free promotion at WDW (buy a 7 night package for the price of a 4 night) as well as kids sail free on DCL that included prime spring break weeks (we booked that one). These were back in 2008/2009-ish. I also remember getting a ton of offers in the mail for deeply discounted WDW resort stays after 9/11/01.

Yes, we booked that in February 2009. it even included a 200$ gift card. Just pulled out the old confirmation: 9 nights at Poly, 7 day park hoppers for two people, 200$ gift card: 2972 $.

This trepidation is remarkably uneven. We live in Omaha and on a recent return flight from Chicago, nearly the entire plane had just returned from abroad. Omaha is a bit of a countercyclical town, but it's funny to see an almost completely different response from this town about things like the tariffs.

Despite all the talk about the economy slowing, there are huge areas of the economy that are still increasing consumption.

I have personally been hoping for travel demand to cool, but I just don't see it in prices or on the planes, which all seem to be flying completely full, to anywhere and everywhere that we're searching for.

Flight prices certainly have not come down at all! Higher than they have ever been- yet planes are flying full! So people are certainly still traveling!!

Too much supply chasing too few dollars.

Of all the things to worry about these days DCL having to cut prices is not one of them. They could cut prices by 50% and they would still be higher than the competition. I'm sure they will just fine.

Airlines have the luxury of cutting capacity. Meaning they cut flights to keep planes full and prices high. It also eliminates the need for staff and overtime. Cruise lines can't do that without taking a ship off line.

Right, it's been a massive expansion already for DCL by adding the Wish and Treasure (and Adventure and Destiny also taking booking $$s away from the rest of the fleet even though they're not running yet).

I haven't yet seen signs from other cruise lines that they are dealing with waning demand. I think some of these issues are DCL-specific while they scale out their fleet as much as they have.
