The birthplace of the pizza calls it pizza. There is no "pie". ;)

As an American, I would call these pizzas by the name of cheese, pepperoni, and Hawaiian. As someone who lives in Italy, it is a bit different.

Cheese is actually called Margherita. Like all pizzas, it would also come with fresh basil in the center and a drizzle of olive oil.

Pepperoni is not the same as the American pepperoni. In Italy, the word pepperoni is actually green pepper. There is no real salami like American pepperoni, but something close to it is spicy salami. So, if you wanted something like that, you would ask for the "diavola". It also has some red pepper drizzle to make it extra hot.

Of course, there is no Hawaiian pizza in Italy.....at least in my region. You can't even get pineapple as a topping. You can get ham, but it is very different from American ham and not as good on a pizza.

I felt the same way when I left NY for Ga. Actually, I remember just asking for a "slice" which meant a slice of cheese pizza. No need for a lot of crap on them because they were good enough without it.:thumbsup2

Robin- We still ask for a slice and everyone knows what you want. The best pizza's are still in Brooklyn!

:thumbsup2:thumbsup2:thumbsup2

When I walk in, I say "Can I get a slice". If I want extra cheese, then it's a slice with extra cheese.

If I want a whole pizza then I say "let me get a pie"

If you've never had a Hawaiian Pizza you don't know what you're missing. What about a BBQ Pizza, ever had that? And blueberry bagels are my favorite, well after cheese bagels that is. :)

I love pineapples and BBQ. They do not belong on pizza.:scared1: Blueberry bagels are just wrong.:sad2:

:thumbsup2 Yup. I worked at Pizza Hut for a few years, it was Cheese, Pepperoni and Hawaiian, the BEST Hawaiian pizzas are made with ham and not canadian bacon, pineapple and even green onions can be good. We did one once with BBQ sauce instead of tomato, that was good. :)

Ham belongs on a sandwich, not pizza:rotfl:

I'm surprised by the number of people who seem repulsed by the idea of pineapple & ham on pizza. Sure it's a little different, but I've seen this combo since 1980. It's very good! I don't always get it because I enjoy the more tradtitional toppings too, but it's really not disgusting.:)

I tried it once when I lived in North Carolina, it's disgusting.

I'm sorry but reading this thread makes me remember a little song we used to sing as kids:

Pizza, pizza, pizza pie.
If you eat it
you will die!!

:rotfl: I can't get his song out of my head now!!! :rotfl:

Here it's pie. You call and say "may I have a large pie." Or "may I have a large pepperoni." I have never asked for a cheese pizza. I think the guys at the shop would laugh at me.

Must be a regional thing. Where I live, if you called and asked for a pie, they'd say something like "We don't sell pie here, we sell pizza." :)

Actually ham belongs on both, it also belongs on Eggs Benedict. It's not disgusting, it's delish! What don't you like about it? The ham or the pineapple? I just can't wrap my head around people NOT liking Hawaiian pizza......just makes NO sense at all.....

Has anyone ever had pepperoni & pineapple pizza? I love that kind but no one else in my family does so I rarely get it. What about chicken on pizza? I love BBQ Chicken pizza....

I don't eat meat anymore, so we just have cheese pizzas. Sometimes we get stuff on it, but not very often since DS has very strong opinions about THINGS on his cheese, LOL.

Back when I ate meat, it would be a pepperoni pizza. And way back when I ate pig products, it would have been a Hawaiian, OR whatever the actual pizza place we were at called their version.

Yeah, I don't eat it anymore, but it was very good at the time!

It's a Northeast thing.

For the adventurous types, try a "sweet and sour" pizza. We started ordering it in college because our colors were green and gold. Green pepper and pineapple. It started as a joke, but all of us (5 females) liked it! Tastes like sweet and sour, and somehow it worked with the cheese and sauce. Weird!

Hawaiian pizza is delish! Here a Hawaiian pizza is ham and pineapple. What's not to like? Lots of people put pineapple on their ham when they cook it, so why would so many find it repulsive?

Oddly enough, I can't ever remember seeing Canadian bacon on a pizza menu in Canada. We usually just use regular bacon.

In Canada, a "Canadian" pizza is actually pepperoni, bacon and mushrooms. They are also delicious.

...and who would eat it if it was. Nasty! Then again around here they have blueberry bagels, if you can imagine. :scared1:

I love blueberry bagels, of course my town is known as the "Blueberry Capital of the World"! :rotfl2::rotfl2::rotfl2:
