We have dinner reservations at 5pm at Carnation Cafe during our visit. Do you think we would have a view of the Pixar Parade if we sat outside and could we stay that long?

The parade is at 6pm that day.

If you got a table outside (no guarantee of that -- the restaurant will seat you wherever they have a space large enough for your party at the time of your reservation), you probably would be able to see the top part of the parade. But the bottom part of the parade would likely be obstructed by guests viewing from the sidewalk and by other guests walking by (constantly!) on Main Street. I've watched the Soundsational parade from the CC patio, and it was a fun addition to the meal, but only because I'd already seen that parade many times before. For a first time viewing, I would consider it a mediocre to poor view, depending on how far back your table would be from the street. If you were still eating while the parade was going on, I don't see how the restaurant could make you leave. But I would try to balance that with being considerate of other guests if there were a line of people waiting for tables.
There is a dining package specifically for Pixar Play Parade viewing at Plaza Inn. Have you looked into that option?

One thing to keep in mind timing-wise is that if the parade starts at 6, it won't get to you until a bit after 6. If you want to specifically plan for this consider moving your reservation a little bit later.

I agree that you'll be able to see the tops of the floats and hear the music, but you won't have a very good view of anything that is on the street (there might be moments when the crowds part, but not for any sustained period). There is also the chance that they won't let you wait/request a patio table (most times I've been able to request indoor or outdoor, but there have been a few times when the CM said they were not able to accommodate requests). I think it's a fun way to see the parade, if you've already seen it from a better spot, but it's not a spot to watch from if it's the only time you'll see the parade.

In terms of timing, Carnation Cafe is a pretty quick meal. I'd say most guests take between 45 and 60 minutes for a two or three course meal. They're really fast to bring out the food. So if you really wanted to see the parade, I agree, a slightly later time would probably be better (~5:30 pm).

This is something I love to do, you can not really see the parade but you can hear the music. I find it fun, especially if you have seen the parade before.
