Pittsburgh to OBX--best route

Looks like I am going to be heading to OBX for a quick weekend trip on the weekend after Labor Day. I am thinking of leaving Thursday evening after work and driving halfway. If I do leave on Thursday, I would be leaving from Wheeling, WV.

What is the best route from Pittsburgh to avoid DC and does anyone have any recommendations for a good halfway stop? Winchester, VA looked close to halfway when I put it on Mapquest.

Hi -
I looked at the routes suggested by Google Maps from Wheeling and Pittsburgh and the suggsted route looks good to me, avoiding DC and on some picturesque roads too. I love I-66 and I-68 through those areas.

As for a halfway stop, either Cumberland or Winchester seem good, and hotel rates in Winchester appear to be low.. being a truck corridor helps that.

Use Google maps to zoom in on these areas and type "hotels" in the search bar to see candidates.. with links to reviews and reservation sites.
