"Pittsburgh Food"??

I'm between WV and Pittsburgh, so I wasn't sure. I love pepperoni rolls!

I grew up in Western PA and I don't know what pepperoni rolls are so they aren't a "native" Pittsburgh food.

But they sound good!

Halupki is the stuffed Cabbage rolls people are mentioning. It is different than haluski.

I am so hungry and would die to have some halupki right now! It is too much work for tomorrow but I think Kielbasi and perogies are on the menu, or hot sausage.

Any Pittsburgh people on that are old enough to remember weddings at the fire halls with the standard menu of Halupki, rigatoni and fried chicken? throw in some polkas and you were all set.

I am a pittsburghre and have to chime in here. So if yinz are:happytv: going to do this let me give tou some good ideas.... ham bbq perogies.... halishki... rigatoni... put fries on a sandwich or a salad... samwich ring or hogies.... jumbo..... pretzle jello. If I think of anything else ill post it... good luck.... ohhh kabolsi too! Go steelers! I would love to won a super bowl while I'm in disney

I never cared for Isaly's chipped ham. It was too salty for me. Kolbasi, Pierogies.

Yeah, I just use cooked ham. Still salty, but nowhere near as much as Isaly's.

They say banana splits were invented in Latrobe, PA ... I grew up there, about an hour outside of Pittsburgh. Don't know how true it is, but that at least gives ya a dessert!

Just moved here from NJ and these are all popular here. I am making sausage sandwiches for the game.

I had to go to Pittsburgh for work and I swore I wasn't leaving the city until I got one of those sandwiches.

Another vote for Chipped Ham :thumbsup2 A big old pot of Islay's Ham BBQ would be good!

I really like the ham. I have not tried the BBQ yet.

I agree with italian sausage smothered in onions and peppers (again, easy to make in advance and have ready).

Perogies swimming in butter and carmalized onions.

Stuffed cabbage (I hate it, but it's a big thing)

Keilbasa

Things like Primanties, O-Fries and Potato Patch fries have to be eaten in the place you buy them...piping hot and fully "Pittsburgh"

haluski ( cabbage and noodles)

Apparently Iron City Beer is a bit of a big deal and will be served.

And the Pretzel jello

Chipped, Chopped Ham BBQ's are a staple. Just throw the ham in the pot with BBQ sauce and you're good to go. My wife likes to add pickle relish but I don't. I didn't grow up here in Pittsburgh (though I've been here for 20 years now) so guess I didn't develop that taste.

When we visit family in Raleigh/Durham and Florida, we always have to bring Chipped, Chopped ham. They won't let us in if we don't.

I also second a good steak salad. Outside of Pittsburgh they look at you funny if you order one and ask where the fries are! Steak salads ALWAYS have french fries on them in Pittsburgh. Seems like everywhere else you go they don't.

And many from the 'burgh will tell you the Primanti's is only good when you're drunk. While I agree they are EXTRA-SPECIAL when you've been drinking, they always go down good!

Pierogies....http://www.pierogiesplus.com/
Need I say more??? :rolleyes1

No only remember it, it was my wedding reception!! We also had 5 kegs of Iron on tap. And this was in 1996- so not too long ago!

No offense, but no one from Pittsburgh uses regular ol' BBQ sauce for their Ham BBQ's. If you can't get your hands on a bottle of Isaly's BBQ sauce sauce, then make your own:

1 cup ketchup
1 cup water
1 tablespoon brown sugar
1 tablespoon cider vinegar
1/4 cup sweet pickle relish (if desired)
1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
1/4 teaspoon ground cinnamon
1 pinch ground black pepper
1 pinch garlic salt
1/2 teaspoon liquid smoke flavoring .
Put all in pan and let simmer for 20 mins.

Also, the ham must be "chipped" or "chopped" to make it a true sandwich. Not sliced.

And the Pretzel jello

This made me scratch my head because I've never heard of it, then again crackle made with Saltines sounds icky but is surprisingly yummy so I guess I'll be on the lookout during the Spring festivals that will be here soon.

It looks a lot like Strawberry Shortcake.

Nope, nothing like Strawberry Shortcake. It has a lot of different tastes going on at once, unlike SS-which is just sweet. Strawberry Pretzel Salad has sweet, salty, creamy, chewy and tart all going on at the same time. It is very easy to make too!

Don't all weddings have haluski, rigatoni, and fried chicken? If not, they don't know what they are missing! I have lived in Pittsburgh my whole life - love perogies, Primatantis, and chipped ham. My mom made us 'frizzle burgers' when were kids - fried chipped ham with melted American cheese (yum yum).

I am not allowed to attend a family picnic without bringing jello pretzel salad :)

We do the jello pretzel salad here in MN, too.

But, what is chipped ham? Is it just ham, cut up really small??

And Dh wants to go to P'burg just for Primanti's. They do look good.

Speaking of weddings, don't forget the cookie trays with "to-go" boxes at the end!

I'm told that's a 'burgh thing.

OH...I almost forgot...Since we're talking food....

D'jeet Jet??

didnt know it was a burgh thing but the cookie tray thing is right, you swear some people never seen a flippin cookie before! :lmao:

wings are big for us, and a past poster was right, it always "wing night" somewhere! seasoned wings with a side of ranch!!
plus steak salads with fries! and of course all the stuff already mentioned :thumbsup2
