DH is wondering is there any food that is famous in Pittsburgh that we could make this weekend for the game?? Example - Philadelphia has "Philly cheesesteaks"

thanks:cool1:

Primantis....

Its a sandwich on italian bread, with french fries, cole slaw, and your choice of meat, cheese, and other fixings you want on it.

A DF of ours and my DS's Basketball Coach is a die-hard Steelers fan from Pittsburgh. For some reason I vaguely remember him talking about some of his family's traditional meals but the only thing that comes to mind is his love of scrapple and red bean chili. I'm bringing my son over soon & will ask and report back.

Scrapple is more from Central PA than from Pittsburgh.

wings, pierogies, dogs with saurkraut, hoagies. Did I mention wings?
Aren't wings famous for being from Buffalo not Pittsburgh?

A few things that Pittsburgh is famous for...

Primanti's sandwiches
Heinz Ketchup
Klondike bars
Devonshire sandwich - basically an open face turkey sandwich with a cheesy cream sauce
Iron City beer
Isaly's chipped chopped ham
Clark bar
Fried zucchini strips
Pierogies
Big Mac - invented in Pittsburgh

I just found this on wikipedia...
Roethlis-burger – Hamburger named after Steelers quarterback Ben Roethlisberger; made up of ground beef, sausage, scrambled eggs, grilled onions and American cheese

Yes Buffalo is famous for their Buffalo wings, but almost any western Pa local can name a bar within 10 miles that is having a wing night on any given night. Plus we have the 'lube.

Well, I can say the same about any town here in KY and almost every town in the USA. Wings are everywhere. But you ask anyone what town is famous for chicken wings? It's not going to be Pittsburgh.

1. Hot sausage sandwiches with grilled onions and sweet peppers

2. Periogies

Most any Polish, Slavic, German side dish

Chipped ham

Beer
Those are the things I grew up with.

Just think European workers working in a steel mill and what they would come home and eat.

Yes Primanties is famous but neighborhood bars were making hot sausage sandwiches (Italian sausage) long before Primantes was famous

If you want a Pittsburgh drink and you don't want beer then you want Orange Blend
made in Pittsburgh and drank by all kids in the western Pa area.

Another vote for Chipped Ham :thumbsup2 A big old pot of Islay's Ham BBQ would be good!

memories!!!!

It is impossible to get good chipped ham in other parts of the country (I have tried)

Was there anything easier than chipped ham barbecue sandwiches.

The Primanti sandwich
Pierogies
Haluski (cabbage & noodles)
Hot sausage sandwiches
Steak salads (with french fries)
Islay's chipped ham / ham barbeque
Kielbasa

Take some chipped chopped ham and put it in a crock pot then throw in some bar-b-que and make ham bar-b-que sandwiches.

I agree with italian sausage smothered in onions and peppers (again, easy to make in advance and have ready).

Perogies swimming in butter and carmalized onions.

Stuffed cabbage (I hate it, but it's a big thing)

Keilbasa

Things like Primanties, O-Fries and Potato Patch fries have to be eaten in the place you buy them...piping hot and fully "Pittsburgh"

Salads with fries!

pierogies

I made "pierogie" pizza once - mashed potatos, saurkraut, cheddar cheese on a pizza crust....which was much better than it sounds!

Man, this thread isn't only making me hungry, it's making me homesick!!

(and we won the Raven's game because we had Steak Salad for dinner)
