LOS ANGELES (Hollywood Reporter) - Eager to unearth more buried treasure now that "Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl" raised its flag high at the box office this past weekend, the Walt Disney Co. is already talking of setting sail on a sequel to the theme park ride-inspired feature.

In anticipation of the film's success, Disney had already made sequel arrangements with such key cast members as Johnny Depp, Orlando Bloom and Keira Knightley, as well as with the behind-the-scenes duo of producer Jerry Bruckheimer and director Gore Verbinski. And the studio has also begun talks with "Pirates" scribes Ted Elliott and Terry Rossio about drafting a sequel, though no specific story line has yet been set.

Since its opening last Wednesday, "Pirates" has earned more than $78 million, including a $46.6 million opening-weekend take that easily won last weekend's box office battle.

But it's inevitable these days, it's not the Blob, it's not The Birds, it's not the Spiders, it's not the Snakes, it's the creature from the lack of imagination - The SEQUEL.

Let me start by saying I love Pirates. I've seen it twice - the first week, and would see it two more times if I can sneak away. Clever plot twist with the cursed treasure. Depp playing Keith Richards playing a pirate is too much fun to watch. It's great fun with great art direction.

With that in mind, let me say how extremely dissappointed I am in there being a sequel in the works. It's like Who Wants to Be a Millionare all over (it was good once a week, let's do it 4 times a week). They have a hit with Pirates, so now they want to try and run it into the ground. Come on Disney, be creative! Sometimes sequels are better than the original (TS2), but with Disney's track record I'm not betting on it.

To be the first to quote Walt: "You can't top pigs with pigs".

It's a good thing then that "The Big Bad Wolf", "Three Little Wolves", and "The Practical Pig" never existed... :p

You know Daxx, I was thinking the very same thing! ;)

I only hope they make him a smidge more coherent this time. I'm still not sure how he managed to stay drunk through the entire movie...but then again, I was hoping they would actually use SOME of his genuine acting ability, instead of rely on stoogesque stuff...(Yes, I liked the movie quite a lot) but I don't think they got their moneys worth of JD, he could have done so much more...

JMHO...

Superman II
Terminator II
Rambo II and III
Rocky 2-4
Star Trek 2 and 4

With the characters established, they can concentrate on plot and action and character development.

Not to mention Indian Jones 2 & 3. If Disney does it right (like the Indiana Jones flicks) this could be a good thing. I love Pirates and would see it again in a minute if someone asks. I cannot wait to get the DVD and honestly...I cannot wait to see Johnny Depp or Orlando Bloom again! Disney did a great job with this movie on all levels. As far as an Oscar goes, that remain to be seen, usually in movies like this the actors don't even get recognized!:earsgirl:

Personally I think its a good idea to have a story before planning the movie....

But I guess I'm just weird!

OMG...you left out the best "Sequel" of all time. "The Empire Strikes Back" ....."Luke I am...your Father".

Look, I am not a big fan of sequels, usually I run the other way as fast as I can, but at the end of Pirates, all I could think was "I hope they put out a sequel". That thought scared me a little, but the more I think about it, the more I hope they really do one.

Just watching Johnny Depp for another 2 hours as Captain Jack Sparrow will be worth my admission ticket.:D

Well, they did set it up well for a sequel with that last scene after the credits. You had to know there would be another movie after that.;)

I'd read in an article that the writers of POTC (same writers who wrote "Shrek") approached Disney awhile ago with their idea for POTC and Disney said,"Umm, no..." then, later (fortunately!!!) changed their minds. In the interview, the writers said they had a great idea in mind for a sequel, but felt Disney was going to wait and see how Black Pearl did at the boxoffice. SO! I believe there probably IS a great story to be told and hope that this follows, as someone else said, the Indiana Jones pattern where each successive movie in the series only got better. PLUS, I doubt Johnny Depp or Orlando Bloom would have anything to do with a sequel if they didn't feel it was on par with the first one...neither is really into the "Hollywood scene" nor does either one need the money...they can basically both choose the movies they want to be in.

OMG!!!

I would walk to WDW from Maine ...in a snowstorm...with no shoes....listening to my kids whine....with my MIL-listening to her whine, also......with no coffee or bathroom breaks to see the seguel!!

I loved this movie and I loved the way they set up for the next chapter. I am glad all the key players are on board!!

ROTFLMAO!!!!! I feel the same way!!!!!! But, you put it so eloquently!!!!

I'm torn. On the negative side, they seem to throw most of the pirate movie stuff in the first movie - sword fights, rum, pirate songs, parrots, and tons of references to the attractions - a sequel would have to strain to find new ground - or new water. Also, sequels take money away from an original idea that might otherwise be made. Oh well. On the positive side there's - Keira Knightley, who can be chased all over the Caribbean by zombie pirates for several days and still look perfect.

DW want's to know where she got the make up.

I think for 18, she is has a lot of potential. She's also very pleasing to the eyes!!

A sequel is the perfect fit here due to the storyline and enormous popularity of the film. I understand the creativity concerns but there is so much play with this movie it could be fantastic. For instance, we have yet to truly delve into the character of Jack Sparrow who is intoxicating. (whom I don't believe was swaggering due to a drunken stupor - but rather as a result of a life at sea)

Hopefully Depp will manage the development of Sparrow's nature and tone by carefully avoiding being overdramatic which is a common misconception with a second film - the audience does not embrace a character which has been significantly emphasized in appearance and style.

Star Wars is the best example of sequels out there. The cast stayed together which makes the picture even more appealling and the story continued to develop. Who wasn't caught up in Han Solo - another scoundrel!!!!!!!

Okay, I didn't stick around for all of the closing credits and missed the scene after the credits. Can someone PM me or post here and tell me what happened? Thanks. :)
