Here's the story: http://www.aolnews.com/crime/article/did-mexican-pirates-attack-david-hartley-on-jet-ski/19661057

The wife was on the Today show this morning, I am not sure I am buying her story?

(Oct. 5) -- The case of a Texas man whose wife said he was fatally shot by Mexican pirates while riding a Jet Ski grows more mysterious, as Mexican authorities reportedly are questioning what really happened.

Mexican investigators say they haven't found any evidence of an attack on David Hartley, 30, including his body or the personal watercraft he was said to be riding on Falcon Lake, The Monitor newspaper of McAllen, Texas, reported.

Hartley's 29-year-old wife, Tiffany, told authorities the couple was taking in the sights on Jet Skis on Sept. 30 on the Mexican side of the border lake when several boats of gunmen began shooting at them, hitting her husband in the head. She said she tried to save him but then fled to safety. Authorities say the area on the Mexican side is abandoned and dangerous.

Mexican investigators questioned the account given by Hartley and the two sets of GPS coordinates they were given showing where the couple was said to have been, The Monitor reported.

"We are not sure," Marco Antonio Guerrero Carrizales, the district attorney whose area covers Falcon Lake, told the newspaper, speaking in Spanish. "We are not certain that the incident happened the way that they are telling us."

Asked about the comments this morning on NBC's "Today" show, an emotional Tiffany Hartley responded, "I would have to say that, you know, when they know the pirates are out there. We knew that. We knew there was a possibility of them being there. I believe in my heart that they went back and took him, and they're hiding our Jet Ski, they're hiding him. And we just plea that we get him back. "

Mexican authorities said U.S. consular officials gave them two sets of GPS coordinates where Hartley was last seen, the newspaper said. Without additional information, Mexican officials searched on land and water for about a mile around each location on Saturday, the paper said.

"We are blind with a stick trying to find him," Rolando Armando Flores Villegas, the Tamaulipas State Police commander charged with searching for Hartley, said to The Monitor, speaking in Spanish.

Guerrero said his office has not received a report from Tiffany Hartley, which is required to launch a formal investigation, and told the paper he would like to speak with her.

"Nobody has called to file a report," Guerrero told The Monitor. "If we can talk to her, maybe we can conclude that something really happened. But if she starts jumping and falling into contradictions, the investigation could have a twist."

Though she said they knew there was the possibility of pirates, Hartley said earlier in the "Today" interview that the couple hadn't heard anything about them lately.

"We had heard about the pirates ... we just hadn't heard anything recently," she said.

She said she realized they were in danger when she saw three boats headed toward them and heard gunfire. She said she saw her husband fly over the Jet Ski.

"I quickly turned around and went to him and jumped off my Jet Ski," she told NBC. "And I had to turn him over because he was facedown in the water, and turned him over and he was shot in the head."

She said a boat approached her and "had a gun pointed at me" and then left. She said she tried to get her husband onto her Jet Ski but couldn't.

"And I just kept hearing God tell me, 'You have to go. You have to go.' So I had to leave him so I could get to safety," she told NBC.

Hartley, her in-laws Dennis and Pam Hartley and sister-in-law Nikki all answered no when asked on "Today" if Mexican authorities are doing everything possible.

Sponsored Links"And our plea to the general public, this is not something that there's a textbook on to know what we're supposed to do," Nikki Hartley said. "We've been doing what we've been directed to do by everybody, and I don't feel we've been provided the right information to make stuff work."

U.S. authorities said they're working with Mexico to recover the body, The Monitor said.

"We've asked the Mexican authorities to do everything they can in the case and bring it to a close," Brian Quigley, a spokesman for the U.S. Consulate in Monterrey, told The Monitor. "Both sides are trying to find the body."

The wife reports he fell forward over his jet ski but when she went to check on him floating in the water, he had been shot in the forehead? So he fell forward after being shot in the forehead AND the Mexican pirates just decided to let her go, when they were shooting at her only moments before? I don't know if I am buying this. What do the DIS'ers think?

I am weary. Why the heck would pirates hide a guy shot in the head? Seriously. I can imagine a scenario where they would tell them to hand over any money or take the jet skis.

I haven't been really following this story. Gotta say though it is starting to sound suspicious. Besides that Mexican Pirates want to kidnap people so they can get money. They shoot toward you but not "at you" I did see a picture of the couple together and I must say the only way she would have had a snow balls chance of getting him on the jet ski was pure adrenaline.

It does seem weird. They were able to shoot a man in the head while he was a moving target on a Jet Ski, but were unable to shoot his wife who was in one place when she stopped to try and help him. I guess it's possible, but I can see why they're having a hard time with her story.
I watched her in the interview this AM, did anyone else notice that when telling her story she kept looking down while talking? I'm not saying she did it or anything, but I don't think it happened exactly as she's making it out.

I am so glad I am not the only suspicious person out there. I heard the interview this morning while getting ready for work. Ever since I first heard the story my brain responded with "something just does not sound right"
I guess for me the fact she lived to tell the tale just does not jive with me and hasn't since the very beginning. Now, I will go read the article, these were my thoughts prior to any real details or knowledge.

I saw her this morning and her telling the story it looked like she was trying to be upset. Also tryed to tell the story with a straight face thought she was going to burst out laughing than tried to make it into a cry. What incredibe marksmen they were on the rough water to shoot a man in the middle of his forehead. Also she was able to jump in and turn him over in the water? HOW? Thats not easy to turn dead weight not buying the story. PLUS the pirates go through the trouble of hiding the evidence. Believe that the mexican authorities arent really helping not sure they care .Look at the treatment the Hollaways got in Aruba.

I have my doubts. She said at one point they came up to her and pointed a gun at her and then drove off. If they shot him for no reason, why not shoot her?

Plus I never like when the person who just witnessed this horrible tragedy, can speak about it. I would be too upset to speak. Your husband who you loved so much, was just shot in the head in front of you?? And you can give an interview about it.

I have a hard time believing that she was able to turn him over in the water. He is SO much bigger than she is.

call me suspicious or paranoid, but i don't buy it. these "pirates" shot her husband while both they and he were moving, but when they got to her, they let her go? RIGHT.

I was going to post this earlier, but was afraid of getting flamed for being suspicious. I was talking on the phone with my dad earlier today about this and it seems like ever Susan Smith did what she did and cried and lied and begged for her children to be returned, we are skeptical about these things. It will be interesting to see how this unfolds. I have a feeling it will be the same old, same old we always hear. Wife hires hitman after finding out about husbands indiscretions, or she has a boyfriend or there is an insurance policy floating around out there.

Oh, and supposedly, no one hear gunfire. I didn't watch the interview this morning, just the news report before the interview but if Acklander says she keeps looking down, that's a big old red flag right there. I'm gonna watch it now.

It's a horrible tragedy.
And I was DOUBTFUL from the beginning. What a perfect alibi for her IF.... and....and......

She admits they know about the threats, yet they go anyway..

I really hope for this young man's family that she is the grieving widow.

ever since Susan Smith duped the world..............

There's some other story there- drugs, guns, an affair?? Don't know what it is, but they find that jet ski, and they can figure it out.

I watched her in the interview this AM, did anyone else notice that when telling her story she kept looking down while talking?

I watched the GMA interview. I noticed that she kept fidgeting with the earpiece or something in/with her ear. It was odd.

Ehh.. I'm not buying it.

Ehh.. I'm not buying it.

Yep, just watched the interview. OMG. I don't even think I saw one tear stream down her face. And her voice was so composed in comparison with his mother and sister. Their voices were trembling. And the whole time she was giving the play by play of what happened, she looked down. This one is about as phony as they come.

No motive (for the pirates), no body, no jet ski, no eye witness, no one hearing the gun shots. There is absolutely no evidence to back up her story. I wonder what Merideth was thinking while she was interviewing her.

Thank goodness. I thought it was just me not believing the story. I hope I am wrong but it just didn't seem legit.
