I just checked Pirates on rottentomatoes...It's gone from fresh to rotten in one day...

sigh...

Reviews are one thing, box office is another. Around the country, every midnight showing was sold out (most theatres added shows). Every theatre in Phoenix was sold-out and most had 7-9 theatres going (at each location) for the midnight showing. I have to agree with some of the critics, it was not my favorite movie and was lacking in several areas. That being said, people seem to ignore the reviews as it is already breaking every box-office record on the first day of release.

The only review that matters to me is my own. I have no idea why anyone would listen to someone else to determine whether or not they would like a movie.

Wow...Disney will be crushed to hear this. All they'll have is their box-office to give them a reason to live.

Of course there's no reason to read reviews if you've already decided to see the movie. But a lot of folks are in the position of trying to make that decision, and reviews can be very helpful.

Rottentomatoes.com is a great site in that it posts dozens of reviews of each movie, and comes up with a percentage of positive reviews. They also have a separate rating for "Cream of the Crop" reviewers, generally the bigger name critics and publications. (BTW, Pirates is doing worse in Cream of the Crop than in the overall average, while that is reversed as to Cars). So you can diversify away the risks associates with the idiosyncracies of your hometown paper's reviewer. Whether you agree or disagree with any or all of the reviews, it's certainly a valuable service.

As for the box office, the bad reviews make it seem much more likely that Pirates will have a big dropoff after what's bound to be a huge opening weekend.

My DW and I tend to make it a point to go to movies that get panned by actual critic as we usually wind up enjoying then tremendously. We will be among the many that have seen Pirates by the end of the day. :cool1:

The movie was awsome! Id tell that to any person on ROTTENtomatoes.com. WE all were clapping and enjoying it. It was action packed with laughes and drama. The twists and turns left me on the edge of my seat the whole movie and the end......well go see the movie yourself and youll see. I cant wait for the next premeiere

Nobody wants Pirates to succeed more than anyone in my family! It just seems to take the sail out of a movie when the reviews are this bad...

There are many people that wait for the reviews to decide whether they will shell out the cash or wait for the video.

Thanks DancingBear for explaining things....

I'm afraid this will take the legs right out from under it...

I'm sorry for a stupid question, but I can't seem to find it anywhere.....

How long is the movie? Trying to see when I can fit in a viewing!

151 minutes... butt numbing long......I'm still going...bad reviews or not.

Ain't that the truth!

Sometimes movie reviewers, unfortunately, have an agenda. Specifically, they hate hype. Since this movie received so much hype, I think many (not all) looked to go out of their way to not like the movie.

JMHO, but I have seen it happen before with movies. Heck with the reviewers, just go and enjoy!

I personally find critics mostly useless. There are many critically acclaimed TV shows and movies that are just torture to sit through.

The issue is that most critics are not in the same mindset that the reader is. Take for example Roger Ebert. Here is a midly overweight older man with children, and grandchildren, from a completely different generation. What does he have in common with a 24 year old. Sure Roger Ebert might not like it, but I am not Roger Ebert and we don't share the same interests, so why should I listen to him!!!

How was that Garfield: Tale of Two Kitties?

I like how everyone is ignoring the fact that the movie may actually suck (besides those who have actually seen it.)

I know personally would not be surprised to find a movie that wasn't as good as the first.

Of course, I'm gonna see it tomorrow.

Well afterall, they do call them Movie Critics. ;)
Yeah -- I will be seeing the movie -- with my rose color glasses on. Although I probably won't need them. ;) :wizard: :cheer2:

I just came back from 2:45 movie and it was packed. It was also very good and got a round of applause at the end. Even though it was long the movie flew by. Lots of great action, not as much comedy (I didn't think so) but lots of fun at times. The graphics and stunts are unbelievable. A great way to spend theafternoon. I can't wait until my dh and ds come back from NM camping so I can go see it again.

PS The gfroup I was with can't wait till #3 comes out.

we saw the noon matinee. the whole family DW, DS(12) DS(9) everyone loved it. Didn't think it ws to long either. If you enjoyed the 1st film you'll enjoy this one. Some people (critics) just can't stand to see a sequel succeed. Depp rocks! :cool1: don't be a sheep, decide for yourself.
