I haven't seen this posted here yet, but the release for Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest has been set for 12/05/06.

The date is obviously set so that lots of copies show up as holiday gifts, although many in the Studio's marketing department would have wanted a date closer to At World's End theatrical release.

Speaking of which, May 2007 is looking around Hollywood like High Noon. In that month alone we expect to see Shrek 3, Spider-man 3 and Pirates 3 all battling it out in the theaters for your $400 million in available income. With two of those movies rumored to be costing well over $300 million each before marketing costs - someone's going to take a huge hit and potenitally fatal hit to their bottom line.

Awesome, thanks for the info! :thumbsup2

Ahhh! I can't wait until next summer at the movies! popcorn::

Just to add - the current rumors are buzzing about a "Full Screen", a "Wide Screen" and a 2-disc "Special Edition" (art work has already been released for this one).

Not to sound cocky, but I dont think Pirates will be the ship that sinks(pun intended)

I don't expect Pirates 3 to go down quickly either (I think the green guy will make a lot of money fast and then disappear) - but that last experience anyone has had with releasing a 2 and a 3 so close together was The Matrix sequels – and it didn’t work out so well for them. There is a line of thinking that a period of anticipation is needed between sequels to get the public excited enough to run out the theater.

Another issue is timing. Dead Man’s Chest likely benefited by being the last of the big summer movies to be released. With little else showing up, it was able to keep its screen counts high and the capture the “I dunno, what do you want to see” crowd. Dead Man’s Chest is going to be followed by a couple giants this time – including Transformers, the latest Harry Potter film and The Simpsons Movie. The general trend in the summer is that the audience will give a movie one big weekend, then it’s on to the next. Dead Man’s Chest was also helped that it’s competition – Superman Returns, Click, and The Lady in the Water all turned out to be very weak films. If Spider-man 3 or the Transformers live up to their hype – Pirates might not get all the repeat business that brought in all that money.

On the financial side – almost all (if not more) of the money that Disney ends up receiving from Dead Man’s Chest has now been poured right back into At World’s End. A billion at the box office is not the same as the cash that get’s deposited into Disney’s bank account. With rumors of AWE costing over $300 million to make, and with likely marketing/distribution expenses going to top $150 million – this one single movie is a massive gamble on Disney’s part. No one is really sure how to work the economics of so massive an investment (if the rumors are accurate, At World’s End will cost more than all 3 Lord of the Rings films). Certainly everyone at Warner Brother’s were sure of their $350 million “can’t miss” Superman Returns earlier this year. And Michael Eisner called Pearl Harbor the closet thing to a sure bet in Hollywood’s history.

Nothing in Hollywood is certain.

P.S. And just to prove how wacky things are – they are already fretting over the summer of 2008 when Disney’s The Chronicles of Narnia: Prince Caspian is going up against Halo and The Dark Knight.

].

It seemed to work out alright for the Lord of the Rings movies though.

And that's exactly why Disney is nervous.

The three Lord of the Rings movies were all released a year apart, at the same time of the year, and shortly after the DVD of the prior film had be put out. People were able to follow the story but with enough time between each film to build up some excitment about the next one.

Putting At World's End in theaters so much sooner, but stretching out the gap between DVD and follow-up movie is rather untired. As I said, the only people to try it has been Warner Brothers and they're still selling office furniture on eBay to pay of the production loans for The Matrix sequels.

Big giant corporations don't like uncertainity - and there's plenty of that already in Hollywood.

Besides, becasue of the costs of Dead Man's Chest and At World's End, if they do the same as The Lord of the Rings films, Disney is going to be losing money.

Plus, the LOTR movies were great. Pirates 2 was good maybe even very good but not great. It seems to me if you make a good, fun movie it will do well.

Wow - I'm surprised they're that worried about the competition there. Wouldn't Narnia hit a somewhat different audience than the other two? Honestly, I'd be fine with Narnia going against either of those (but obviously I'm not a producer), but I'd worry more about other movies that might pull it down - e.g. if there were also a Pixar movie also competing (though they'll be able to control this).

Now, Pirates 3 going up against Spiderman 3 - that is one I'd worry about...

So which one will blink first? Sooner or later, one of these release dates will be pushed back. We can be sure of that.

POTC3 will do well I am sure. The filmed a lot of it while filming POCT2. Those other are NO match for it! It will hit theaters on Memorial Day.

I am not too worried about POTC 3. If there were 2 movies I really wanted to see the same weekend, I would just see them both. Besides, Spider Man 3 is slated for release May 4th, and Shrek 3 is to be released May 18th, both before Pirates at the end of May, so I think Pirates will be fine. Everyone who wanted to see the other 2 will have already. Some people just never have anything good to say about Disney -- have a better attitude!! :cool1:

This will be an interesting movie season! I think it's going to be between Pirates and Shrek for the top spot. But I think Pirates will win it.
