I have bought pins at the parks and packed them in my carry on with no issues. I would assume if you were wearing them it would be the same. I had a good amount of pins in my bag as I give them away as presents to my nephews.
We always take the pins in the carry-ons and I have seen kids wear them on the plane home. I keep the lanyard & the pins visible. I don''t put them in a pocket or bury them in the suitcase. I usually put them in a ziploc on the top.
I just thoguht of something...On one trip we got stopped going through security, becasue there was something metalic in DD's carry-on, so they had to open her bag and check. I thought for sure it was the pins. Turns out she had "secretly" packed her purse which was full of change (like $20 worth). The coins had set off the machine! The security guard told her next time, to pull her purse out of hte carry on, because they had to go through seperate, "After all, once you are at the airport, Mom & Dad can't tell you to keep your purse at home."
