Pin Trading?

I ordered some pins off of ebay, and we got them the other day. I ordered 20 (10 per kid). They were, I think, $1.13/pin, you choose how many pins, with free shipping. It was a pretty decent assortment. I just let each kid take turns picking one until they were all divided up. Each got a pin or two that they love and probably won't trade, and each got several that I think they will trade. I'm actually looking forward to it more than I thought I would. I think it will be a fun way for them to get some cheap but somewhat personalized souvenirs.

Be careful with the Pins you buy on eBay, there are a lot of scrapper/ counterfeit pins posted on there.

I have to agree with jtl, is you paid $1.13 a pin and got free shipping you probably bought scrappers, more commonly known as fakes. :( check out the link jtl posted and also feel free to drop in on our Collector's Board thread regarding eBay and pins. :)

Hmmm...I think I'm more confused after reading that. I certainly don't want to have bought fakes. According to that article, the only way I can be sure is to to have bought them directly from Disney? That sort of doesn't make sense, because then essentially any pin that is traded (and not purchased from Disney) could be a fake. Is there any other way for me to be able to tell a fake?

From what I can tell, there seems to be two issues here - the first is the issue of value, with the "scrappers" obviously not worth the value of the originals. Fine, I get that. The second seems to be more of an ethical question, like we shouldn't promote the trading of fake pins. But if you can't tell if they're fake, how are you supposed to do that, you know? Sigh, so confusing. I just want the kids to have fun with it, so I guess I won't worry about it too much...

Ok, I just went and pulled all the pins I bought and now I'm looking at the backs. They all have printing on them - like "Disney Pin Trading" and a year inside a Mickey head. Anything else I should look for?

ETA: The years range from 2005-2009. That's good, right? It said that a lot of the scrapper pins are brand new, not yet released?

i can understand the confusion, personally thats one of the reasons me and DLGF shy away from trading. When we do trade, we usually trade with CM only.

I'd recommend going to the Collectors board:

there are a lot of pin trading threads on it :)

No, not all of them are brand new, some are but not all of them. Go to pinpics.com, go to the search, scroll to the bottom and click continue (don't click any other boxes) and at the bottom of the next page there will be a box, type in scrappers and hit search and that will bring up a bunch of known/suspected scrappers. Also, if you've got specific pins you're looking up then type in a short description and pinpics will pull that up too. PP is not affiliated with Disney, it's run by traders/collectors and we add our own notes about scrappers on each page.

It is confusing, it's a lot to learn and some people don't care to learn. That's fine if that's the choice you make but it really sucks when someone buys a $6.95 pin, trades it to a CM and then later finds out the pin they really liked was a scrapper. Yes, I'm speaking from personal experience.
