Hi,
New to Disney and will be making our first trip in March. Have read many threads talking about pin trading/collecting. Just looking for more information on this. What is it? How do you start? What do you need to buy? And do you think this is something my DD's 5 & 3 would enjoy or understand? Thanks!

There are so many ways to get started. We found some pins at a local Disney outlet. Then we used a lanyard from home to put them on. At WDW, they sell started kits that include a few pins and a lanyard, in all sorts of characters. We have been pin trading for a long time and now have the big books/carss and tons of pins. We look for special pins to commemorate our trip. It is really fun and even my DD gets into it. In fact, she just got a princess book/case for all of her pins. You can trade with any Cast member, as long as it is a disney pin. Also, if the CM has a green lanyard, only kids can trade with them.

My oldest DD (9) started pin trading several years ago and she LOVES it!! We started by getting her a little starter set at one of the resorts and we bought a few pins for her to go along with those. We also had a few wonderful DIS'ers send her some pins to get her collection going and she still has them all from a few years ago! Over the years, she's gotten 3 lanyards full between trading, purchasing and gifts and she is always thrilled to get them. She enjoys talking to all the CM's and really takes her time to talk to them instead of just getting the pin. She's met so many wonderful CM's from different places and I really think that's the best part for her. The CM's always comment about how polite she is, so that's a plus for this proud Mom :thumbsup2
The one thing we've learned is that CM's will not usually trade if they already have a pin that you are trying to give them, some make exceptions and some just gently remind her of "the rules" and she picks out another one to trade. It is so much fun and I just know your DD's will enjoy it :wizard:

This was our first year at WDW with my girls 9 and 3 and they LOVED the Pin trading. I wasn't sure about my 3 (well she was 2 at the time) but she just LOVED it! Of couse you couldn't trade any pf her princess pins! And we still sit around and look at them and talk about trading when we go back next!!

Do older kids trade pins...my brother has started to call me sissy and the other day he said to my mom "sissy and I will trade pins in Disneyworld!"
so do older kids trade pins?

I'm 18 and I love Pin trading...You will see alot of older people trading too:banana:

Just remeber that if a castmember has a green lanyard thats for the little ones, Yellow is for anyone

My DD's have been given some DLP pins can they be traded at WDW?

When DD15 heard that I was starting a collection for our upcomming trip, she acted like a wounded puppy, because I had planned on just 1 lanyard (DH wouldnt be interested, and I dont want to start off the 2y old until next time) So, needless to say, I purchased 2 lanyards, and a couple of special pins, just for her. I had great luck bidding on individual pins on EBAY. I paid anywhere from 51 cents to $9 for a pin, with the help of sellers discounting shipping for buying multiple pins (something like $3 for the first pin, and 50 cents for each additional (there may have been a limit, it really varries by seller.) I always recieved my pins quickly, and in mint condition. I got some great keepers, and also some traders:thumbsup2

LOL! I intentionally bought some that my dd wouldnt be heartbroken to give away, so we dont have any seperation problems come trading time.

The best part about pin trading for my DS (7 and 5) is that it's the only thing they completely control. For once, I can't make the decision for them. They decide what to keep and what to trade...and they choose the pin they want, which is almost never the one I would have picked! They sometimes keep a pin for the whole trip or other times trade it within 5 minutes. For them, it's shopping for free (other than the initial investment) and a chance to interact with CMs. They even mock pin trade with each other! For my littlest one, it's all about the experience as he trades with EVERY CM he sees. I love watching them trade...it's power to them as well as a great souvenir.
