Pin trading ??

I purchased some trading pins off of Ebay, and my kids had no problems trading them with CM's when we were in Disney. It was really a lot of fun for them. There were quite a few pins from the Ebay lot they wanted to keep. They traded an "Oogie Boogie" pin with one CM, and I noticed he did not put it on his lanyard, but on a card in his pocket. Was that a signal that the pin was "junk"? I wish I would have asked him why he did that, but I didn't want to embarass DD.

I have found that the dark gray backround are usually from Disney Catalogue/Disney shopping.

Just went to the local disney store in Mississauga and purchased halloween pins for 3.99 that's in Canadian funds. Great price when you consider they are for trading purposes and when in disney I find the price to be substantially higher.

angel's momma: Very dismayed reading your post and feel so bad for your daughter. That's something that should never have happened and the CM most certainly been reported. I wish I knew who he was to give him a lecture or two myself!

Cast Members should never refuse to trade a pin with a guest unless they already have that particular pin on their lanyard (we cannot display duplicates) or it's a pin with the guest's personal name on it or a service award type pin. I believe we are limited to two trades a person.

angel'smomma, I am so sorry your DD had a bad experience trading--it made me want to cry just reading it! One of the nicest CMs we ran into was in the Christmas shop at DTD--she wasn't the one that explained junk pins, but she did say that they will ALWAYS trade with a child for whatever pin they have and let them pick any one off their lanyard. It just made me feel good thinking they were trained to be so indulgent of the kids. I hope all of your DD's future trades are better, to make her forget that nasty CM!!

This thread has made me more interested in the different Disney pins, so I surfed around Ebay a while ago--it's really hard to tell online. I saw one I just bought a month ago at WDW, but the pic on ebay almost made it look fake! We do it just for fun, and I have no idea what different pins are worth, other than the smile they bring to DD5's face!

angel's mom.. I too, am sorry your daughter had such a bad experience.

We had several CM say no to our kids. We traded hundreds of times over our vacation period. Each time they said no, my boys would look at me very big eyed. All of the No's were from pins they had gotten off of other Cm's lanyards.. they weren't looking for quailty, just characters they liked.

About halfway through, we showed them how to tell the difference.. so they were a bit more picky (not the little one though, we brough one sedesma home with us, but it's nemo, and he loves it).

Angel's Momma that is horrible! I am so sorry you guys had to go through that. Made me feel yucky just reading it.

It is usually the Sedesma (has Spain or sedesma on the back), Bertoni (Bertoni Milano on back) and Propins (usually has propins and/or Germany on the back) that are considered junk. I like the propins except they scratch easily due to the shiny coating on them. Unfortunately a lot of the ebay sellers are selling scrappers (pins that have errors or damage that were supposed to be destroyed), unauthorized versions (extra copies of the pin were made instead of the mold being broken) and flat out counterfeits. There really isn't a way to tell most of the scrappers and unauthorized pins from the real ones. I can't post links or pictures yet because I'm new but you can look up both (sedesma and propins) on the pinpics website. The Dizpins website has a list of some of the scrappers/unauthorized and counterfeits. I for one feel that there are no junk pins (as long as they're not counterfeit or scrappers). There are characters and styles available in the (Sedesma, propin, bertoni) that you can't get in the "good" disney pins. My last trip I had a blast trading for the teenie tiny disney store pins that someone was trading around the parks. So little and adorable... The cast members couldn't figure out why I liked them because they were so small. To each his own. Have fun!

I think if you collect what you like--a special character or theme---then there are really no "bad" pins, just some of poorer quality.

I think "fake" and "unauthorized" pins do hurt the pin market but as with so many other fake items (watches, handbags...) it's 'buyer beware'.

I only have about 3 dozen Mickeys but I love them all! (2 dozen on a corkboard and about a dozen to wear!)
