Pin trading - how old to enjoy?

DD will be turning 3 this November at Disney (yay!). Just wondering if she's too young to really get into pin trading and if it might be best to wait another year or so. Any advice? Thanks!

I can kind of answer. At 4, my son had a very hard time trading away any pin that he had in the starter set since all pins were all new to him, and in his view his. Since then, it has gotten easier as he gets older as he sees pins that he actually wants more than the ones that he already has. It also helps that we buy him pins that he doesn't want for trading (for him princesses and ones that he thinks are "girlie" since girls still repulse him!)

I think it depends on the child and how well the understand the point of pin trading. I agree that for really young children, it's probably best to start with pins that they don't like so they won't want to keep them. I brought some pins with me for the 5 year old in my group to trade with, but she liked the pins (as mentioned, they were all new to her and she didn't have them - even though she had no idea who the characters were on the pins) and didn't want to trade them away.

My kids started trading pretty early. I was the one who had the problem, though. My type A self had to struggle to keep control as my daughter continued to trade some pretty good pins for cheap starter pins.

My kids have loved pin trading since they were little! I usually just get some booster packs off Ebay for a decent price and split them between my 3 DD's. My youngest was around 3 when we first started and she loved picking out 'new' pins from CM lanyards. I usually told my younger ones that they could put four on their lanyard each day and then when we got back to the resort they picked the ones they wanted to keep and the ones they may want to trade.

By "starter pack" do you mean the loose ones people sale on ebay? Just know 90% of those are fake. No CM is going to turn away a child but an adult might be told sorry I can't trade for that.

To the OP I think 6 and older is a good age for pin trading. Most of the younger ones don't get the nature of trading and a lot of the littles I met as a CM were reluctant to trade away their starter packs. They didn't get the idea of collecting a different set (CM lanyard pins or specific characters as an example) so they just thought of it as oh look a new pin!

I just introduced my 3-year-old niece to pin trading this summer. To make it easier for her I started her with 10 pins...5 different pins and a duplicate of each. So, she had one Minnie pin to keep, and one duplicate Minnie pin to trade away. One Mickey to keep, and one to trade away, etc, etc. It helped her get the hang of it without being upset about giving something away. By the end of the week she totally understood how it worked and traded even those pins that she didn't have duplicates of. Plus, she felt like a big kid with her very own lanyard. It's a great hobby and some 3-year-olds will definitely enjoy it. Have fun!!

When DS was a very shy, minimally verbal 2 year old, he loved it. It was really cute to watch. But he also knew what to do from watching his 2 older siblings.
