Run away, it's not too late for you! (kinda kidding) If you want to wind up like the rest of us loonies, come on in the water's fine. Rule #1 Have Fun
Rule #2 Pick a theme, trying to get all 50,000+ pins will make you insane and broke.
"How it works" If you see a pin on a CM lanyard that isn't green (only for kids)
you can trade one pin for their pin, so long as they don't have that pin already on their lanyard. But the pin must have the Disney copyright on it (Hard Rock Cafe pins will not do) There are pins on the CM lanyards which you can only get by trading. They will have a small mickey head on them (these are called lanyard or hidden mickey pins). The normal pins you can buy are called rack pins, because you will seem them for sale for a long time. Then there are LE (limited edition) pins, where they only make a certain number (varies widely). These are normally better traders than others.
You can also trade with guests, but they don't have to trade unlike the CMs. It doesn't have to be a one for one trade. This is where it can get tough and intimidating. Pin Traders who take advantage of other pin traders, especially new ones are affectionatly called "sharks".

As for starting to get them, you can wait if you like, but WDW pins will run you about $8 or more each. If you go to the local Disney store in the mall you might be able to get some for $5. Then there are the auction Internet sites, but cavet emptor. If you get a bag of lets say 12 of the same pin, and that pin happens to be on the CM lanyard, then they will not trade. Hope this helps.

thanks totally adore minnie and mickey. so think i will pick them for my theme, what about the lanyards where do i get them?. dh thinks im mad but who cares. :rotfl2:

ive seen the gold one on a pic from the dream team but i know be impossible to get that or the tinkerbell one.

i might get some from auction site so i go with some but will get some from wdw as well, will feel an idiot at first looking at someones chest for a pin but will get used to it i think.

does it become totally adictive?

thanks for your help :)

The dream team lanyards are nice (they are wider than most) and I almost got one last time. You could get lucky. Not impossible.

Best way to not look like an idiot is walk up to someone and talk to them first and ask "May I look at your pins?" The savvy pin trader will then pull the lanyard away from their body and up to your eye level. Go to the 1:00 pin talk @ Expo Hall and ask Scoop for his Pin Ettiquette talk. Then look like an idiot like the rest of us!

Does it become totally addictive? That's why I told you to RUN Away. There is no 12 step program......and we don't want one!

Heh heh heh - asking Daber and Parkhopper if pin trading/collecting gets totally addictive. :rotfl: :rotfl: :rotfl: :rotfl:

YES - and it is great. It is a wonderful hobby - and even though it can get expensive, it is a great and extremely social hobby.

Addictive, addictive, addictive! But oh such fun! I have no idea when or if we will be heading to WDW again so I'm adding to my collection of Mickeys thru ebay.

Are there any other ways/places to trade with collectors besides at Disney? I really enjoyed the experience of trading with CM and after my initial shyness, would ask to see their pins. ALL were so nice and friendly! I think everyone should be trained in 'disney-etiquette'!!

i probably sound like a total idiot but are these the pins that have been on sale for a few years? i last went to disney about 3-4 years ago and bought pins but they werent such a big deal then. im going in the summer and want to know if i should take my pins.

:rotfl2: so im in for a fall into adictivness ok bring it on. thanks i will do that talk thing. weve got a disney store here do you think they will have pins. just a couple so my lanyard wont look bere

Disney has been selling pins for many many years but they have only been sold on a large scale since about October 1999. Any pin that has the Disney copyright on the back is tradeable, however if you have very old pins, I would recommend checking www.pinpics.com to see if they are rare before you trade them (look at the amount of people trading the pin versus the number of people wanting the pin)

I bought pins in one of the London Disney Stores around the corner from my hotel last summer. So yes, your Disney Store should have pins.....and ones you will have no trouble trading here in the States, since you can only get them in the UK!

daber, you made me laugh, and you are right. We got addicted a few years ago when the World of Disney store gave away free pins. That was a good hook on Disney's part.

I usually go to www.dizpins.com and go to the Boards and then to the pin sale section and have ordered some nice pins from people there. The trader pins are usually $2.25 and sometimes shipping is free. In fact, I usually want to keep about half of what I order because I like them so much.

im off to meadowhall (our shopping mall), fri so will pick some up and hope they are tradeable, especially for minnie :)

thanks for all your help on this
