I am totally new to this pin thing, but it sounds great. I was thinking about getting the kids (even the adults) each two pins before going to disney one to keep one to trade I was going to have them put the pins on thier water bottle lanyards (for identification purposes as well as acting as a pin lanyard) I have to get 18 pins before I leave to start each person off. I wanted to know where I can get them at a reasonable cost but still official disney pins for trading. Any other pin collecting/trading information is welcome!! Thanks to all!!!

Wow. I was going to suggest more than two pins each, but you have a lot to buy! You can get lots (lots as in groups. If you buy them individually, they'll usually cost you more) of pins on ebay for, normally, around $3 a pin. In the parks they'll cost $6.50 and up. I've also heard that there is an outlet mall with a Disney Store near WDW that has them cheap sometimes (as low as 99 cents).

We went to WDW in October 03. In June our local Disney Store had a clearance sale and all there pins were under a dollar. I am STILL kicking myself for this, but since I didn't think we'd like the trading much, I only bought one for each of us. :( One of my biggest mistakes. I had no idea how much fun it would be. We ended up getting one of the starter lanyards at the MK for each of us ($25 ea.) they have four pins on them (two of which are identical, to trade)

Pin trading is a blast. All three of us (ds#2 is still too young - 17 months) are still into it. We've bought a few off of ebay since the trip.

We have a DS 6 and a DD 4, and they both love their pin lanyards. Our kids were allowed to purchase one pin a day when we were at WDW, and they each started out with a lanyard and two pins (one of which came with each lanyard; DD's in pink, surprise surprise:p ). For little ones trading we never buy the expensive pins. I have been getting whatever limited editions are available to us (we have the Disney Visa, are DVC members and will soon be AP holders, each of these has special pins you can buy) for trading purposes, as more serious pin traders like to seek these out. My kids just like pretty pins: DS likes lots of color and cool things like trains and Buzz Lightyear, while DD likes Minnie Mouse, anything floral and princesses (of course). So it's nice to have some limited editions to trade with the serious folks for some of their more unusul pins.

We always supervise when they are trading so they don't trade away their favorites, then regret it later. But if DD trades a $10.50 pin for one that cost someone else $0.99, I am not going to worry about it so long as she like the pin she's getting.

I would suggest you not put the pins on the water bottle holders if you're also going to use it for water bottles. Unless you use locking pin backs (available at most of the WDW pin stations but are very difficult to use when trading), pins have the uncanny ability to fall off. I suggest getting pin trading lanyards (which you can either find on ebay or wait until you get to WDW).

Happy Trading!

I never thought of that I am glad you pointed that they could fall off. I would hate to spend that kind of money (not alot for one, but a couple starts to add up) and have them dissappear one by one.

Another great place to get pins is at cheappins.com. Sometimes you can find them for less than $2 each. These are the ones you want to trade anyway! eBay is also a great place to look. The kids will love it -- my two DSs have infected at least 4 kids with this great souvenir!
