Hi, Barb!
These are the pilates tapes I have:

It reminds me of yoga because it's doesn't get your heart rate soaring like an aerobic workout (at least not me!)

I do the 20 minute tape several times a week and just added the 50 minute tape once a week until I can build up to more. When I first started, I could just go through the motions and try to get familiar with the moves. Then as I logged more time with the tapes, I started being more conscious about keeping my butt clenched, keeping my belly button pulled in, etc. It really makes a difference in how much benefit I get from the specific moves, but it's something I had to work up to.
There are other forms of pilates. Some people have a trainer (I'm thinking of hiring a trainer in the future to make sure I am using the proper form). There are also pilates machines that look like torture devices.
SideShowBob posted about his experience w/ pilates to help him recover from a bad back. He has strengthened his ab (core) very much and the pilates exercises have done wonders to help him recover from his back injury.
Ever see those exercise balls that look like beach balls? Those are used in some forms of pilates too (and one day I might own one!)
Here's a link to the torture device, I mean, pilates machine examples:

Here is a link to a FAQ about a specific type of pilates (didn't take a good look at it, but it might give you some good background information):

All I know is that I am slowly becoming addicted to this workout. I am feeling it more and more every time I do it, and every time I do it I challenge myself more. And it gets easier to complete the moves! I really love it and feel it is making a big difference in my middle!
