Officers: Pierced ’gothic kittens’ marketed on Web
WILKES-BARRE, Pa.
12/18/2008 3:33:18 PM

Humane officers say a Pennsylvania woman marketed "gothic kittens" with ear, neck and tail piercings over the Internet.

Officers with the Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals removed three kittens and a cat Wednesday from a home outside Wilkes-Barre, about 20 miles southwest of Scranton.

Officer Carol Morrison says the society got a tip that the Ross Township woman was selling the pierced kittens on the Internet.

She says, "It’s unbelievable anybody would do this to kittens."

Charges are likely against the homeowner, whose name was not released.

Morrison says the woman has a pet grooming business in the basement of her home.

I don't think this is a great idea, but it is okay (well, I suppose it is a matter of opinion, but it is legal) to pierce the ears of an infant human.

What do you think?

That's animal cruelty pain and simple! Those animals don't understand what's going on, they just understand they are pain. If they get in a fight or are playing around, those piercings are goign to be ripped out. That woman needs to go to jail. (FWIW, I don't think you should pierce a baby's ears either).

I don't disagree that infants and small children should not have their ears pierced, but I don't see how you can make a case for animal cruelty when it is legal to do the same to a human child.

I don't agree with piercing human babies either, so they're both equally cruel to me.

What's next? Tongue piercings on puppies?

:thumbsup2 Amen!! You are absolutely correct! And yeah, don't pierce an infant's ears either.

Interesting.

On one hand, a "piercing" is generally with a much bigger gauge needle than is used for an ear piercing, so I imagine, but it's only an assumption, that the jewelry for the holes is much much bigger.

The argument that it's legal for babies but not for kittens is a very interesting one indeed.

Although I think it's kinda cute when itties have their ears pierced, I can't even fathom doing it to a baby, especially sicne I've recently learned that it is much better to do it properly with a piercing needle, rather than the "gun" they use at some doctor's offices (my ped is the one that pierced my own ears when I was 4) and at the mall places. I can't even imagine doing it to my kid at the same age that I had it done!

But ya know, the "it's legal for this one why not for the other one" doesn't really follow through, even in the same species, since in this country it's legal to surgically alter baby boys, but not for baby girls, even if they are both for religious purposes. So law is not always logical!

I suppose you are right. It is illegal (and IMO rightfully so) to disturb an eagle's eggs, but legal to get an abortion.

Also in some states infants can't have their ears pierced until they are one years old.

They tag cows ears. They tag wild animals for research & tracking. While I don't like that either, we pierce humans ears & other body parts. How is this different? (Not saying I think its ok, I just don't see how its different.)

(Me...someone who has had to give daily IV fluids to kitty for past 4-5 yrs.)

I don't see what the big deal is about piercing and infant's ears. I had my ears pierced when I was 6 months old, and I can assure you I don't remember a thing and have no lasting resent towards my parents for doing it. If the kid decides later they don't want to wear earrings, then fine, they don't have to. But I don't see what the big deal is.

And I guess by that logic, I don't see the big deal about piercing kitties ears either. Although it's legal to spay and neuter puppies and kittens, I don't think it would exactly be legal to cut the testicles off some infant boy.

I think the big difference between baby ear piercing and the kittens is shown in the pics! Babies do not have GIANT heavy looking piercings hanging from their ears! (I am not an advocate of peircing babies ears) The poor kittens looked miserable! It's little ears were being pulled down by the weight of the items she used and it looked like it was in pain! Tages on wild animals and cows are lightweight and not intrusive. So really what was done to the kittens can't even be compared to that. I think the woman should be charged with animal cruelity. What she did was cruel and definately interferred with the kittens quality of life.

Uhm, I'm sorry, are you insane? How can you compare circumcision to the mutilation endured by those poor girls?

#1 What they do to the girls would be the equivalent of removing all of the ***** that is outside of the body, not a little bit of skin, because that is what they do, remove all of the ******** and usually all of the ***** that is outside of the body. O.freaking K?

#2 It is not done for "religious purposes" it is done to control the girls when they become women. If they can receive no pleasure from sex then they won't wander. That's a far cry from circumcision. All the guys I've been with were circumcised and they had NO problems enjoying themselves.

You can believe circumcision is bad if you want to but PLEASE don't equate it with the HORROR that is female circumcision. It makes you sound like a complete whack job and totally lessens what those poor women have gone through. It's like comparing summer camp to the Holocaust. No freaking way.

Thank you:thumbsup2

My cat has a slightly ripped ear from when he used to fight with his brother. I can only imagine how badly cats would rip themselves just trying to remove these things from themselves. If they did accept them I bet that they would still get them snagged and so on. Cats aren't even supposed to wear regular collars!

I think it's ridiculous and very cruel.

This is disgusting and disturbing and so many other words I can't say right now because I like the DIS and want to be allowed to return.

What the %^$%$^& is WRONG with some people?!

There have been two times that I have seen pierced ears in dogs (both Chihuahuas). Both times, the dogs eventually ripped the ear rings out (fortunately, they are both OK now). In both of these instances, the owners had little (fake) diamond studs in one of the dogs' ears. One owner used a commercial human piercing 'gun' (she had access to one at work) the other talked her previous vet into doing it at the time the dog was spayed.
The piercings in these kittens are huge. IMO, this is cruelty as the animals will cause damage to themselves by trying to remove the piercings.

I learn something new everyday. I didn't even know people were doing this to their animals. :confused3 I guess my question is why? Show animals?
