Oblio, when I scrolled down to your post all I could think of was the part in NEMO where they ask the fish how to get to Sydney and they make the sign for the Opera house and go "ahhhhhhhh". I'm coming there one day, it's been a life long quest to get to Australia and to dive the Great Barrier Reefs. Those pictures are beautiful.

I have a picture request, do you have any of the beaches there? I remember seeing a television show that showed that most beaches had, for lack of better words, cages in the water to fence off the swimming sections, is this true of most of Australia?

I'd love to see how the beaches look there, also do you know can you dive and see things right off the beach or must you use a boat?

I'm new to the thread-I've been lurking around the DIS for a while now, but I stumbled upon this and thought it would be neat! So here's some photos of my stomping grounds...

I'm waiting for some of our European readers to comment on the "old houses/bridges" thing... our idea of old is a lot different than theirs.

Or if you're a Steve Martin fan, you might remember the line from L.A. Story: "Some of these houses are over twenty years old!"

I ate lunch in Sighisoara in Romania in a house where Vlad Tepes (aka Vlad Dracul, the inspiration for Dracula) lived back in 1431-1435... I have no idea just how old the building itself was... now that's old.

OK, I'll join in with the old house thing! Here is a picture of the castle near my house. Parts of it are 1000 years old and in the Victorian era Charles Dickens used to visit here (it is where he wrote Oliver Twist and the house and our village are the inspiration for his novel Bleak House.) It's not a great picture I'm afraid as is was a rainy day.

I grew up on the English East Coast near to Whitby which is the setting for some of the Dracula story. Here is Whitby Abbey in the mist.

Are these old enough for you?

Here are a few I took on the London Eye which is a kind of big wheel that you go round in and you can see all over the city.

Here you can see Big Ben and the houses of Parlement.

Below you can see Downing Street where Tony Blaire lives (the street inbetween the big white rooved building and the grey rooved building, the grey one is where 10 Downing Street is.) Beyond that you can see a lake and at the end of it is Buckingham Palace. Then you can see the city in the distance.

P. Sherman... 42 Wallaby Way, Sydney! which of course doesn't exist. the area where the dentist's office should be (called Neutral Bay) is not far from my office and a few doors down from my wife's cousin's unit

here is the view from my office

this is right where the dentist office *should* be. as you can see there's no road (for the bagged fish to scoot across) where the pizza planet truck was, and a bunch of multi-million dollar units where the office should be.

here is a view from the south east bridge pylon. Neutral Bay is the second bay over.

there are a few beaches on the Harbour that have shark netting. most of the open ocean beaches around Sydney don't have any netting, even between the flags. there are some beaches up north that have the nets. some of the popular beaches like Manly have floating barriers to help keep out the tens of thousands of Blue Bottles (portuguese man-o-war) that get swept in every year. i got stung by one while taking my older boys boogie boarding when they were younger, and it really hurts.

if you are going up to the Barrier Reef - you will need to take either a cruise out to the Reef or go to one of the islands (Hayman, Hamilton, etc.) to see anything. down here visibility is often pretty low and it's not tropical. you can go right off the beaches in far north Queensland and at least get some coral and colourful fish. you can go off the north western coast (near Broome) and see whale sharks. i saw a huge manta ray off Hamilton several years ago. my dw says it's heaps better off Papau New Guinea (she grew up in PNG) with tropical fish, coral, and tons of ww2 wrecks.

Since today is the home opener for the Boston Red Sox, here are a few from Fenway Park, this place is almost 100 years old now. Opened in April 1912, 3 days after the Titanic sunk.

i have a friend who came here from France and his parent's home was older than the US so guess everything is relative course nothing says i can't add that continent to my barn quest as well..except that i would have to get on a plane

kind of like the old Berlin wall? i must need to watch the news more often cause i had no idea...actually it looks like the supposed recreation of a supposed dingo fence in the supposed Australian portion of our zoo and the mini "Outback" train ride ( except the boards are supposed to be older and interspersed with bits of roofing, metal etc

yup - they've boarded up North Sydney... keep out!

they're remodelling the train station so it's all plywood on the outside. i don't know why they have a sign on the outside of the station telling you where you are?? well duh... of course you're in North Sydney, now.

regarding the dingo fence: there are actually two fences and they are both very long. one was started in 1885 to keep the dingoes out of the south eastern part of the continent from lower Queensland to the middle of the bight - especially the sheep areas of South Australia. the reality was the dingoes weren't really much of a threat as they didn't really kill the sheep. in fact it probably caused more harm than good because the rabbits and 'roos multiplied (which the dingoes were preying on) and ate the pastures that the sheep were supposed to eat... oops

the other fence, which was constructed in the 1920's, basically cut right through the western part of the continent from top to bottom. it was built to keep the rabbits out of the western part of WA. the rabbit plague was introduced when ships first came here. they reproduced like, well... rabbits -and they have been responsible for many plant and animal extinctions.

my favourite commercial (you can see it on youtube) loosely pokes fun at this.

anyway both fences are wire fences, not really plywood or roofing.

regarding the sand in Manly - from time to time, the sand is very reddish brown - especially when wet. it's just from the rock that has been eroded and washed away over the centruies. there are layers of reddish and whitish. after big storms, the whole process starts again and heavier sediment can get dumped on the beach. most of our beach sand is very white - and it squeeks when you walk on it.
it's very different than california beach sand.

Yes, they are cranes.

The City Of London (the "City" refers to the financial district to the east - behind St Pauls) is going through a construction boom. This is good news for us as my DH works in Building Services and is working on several of the buildings going up in the city right now!!!

Many offices are being refitted, others demolished and more profitable housing projects being built instead. Further east still, we have the huge Olympic developments, plus the transport network being built for the games in 2012.

The high speed Eurostar trainline which currently comes into Waterloo Station is nearly finished and will come in from the east to Stratford. These trains travel through the channel tunnel to Paris, Brussells and beyond. We use this to go to Disneyland Resort Paris! When they have finished the high speed rails, this journey will take around 2.5 hours!

I love seeing the pics of Oz, we plan to visit one year to take my Husband 'home' to Adelaide. We also plan to do Sydney, uluru and other places so thanks for the pics!
