Thank you so much for taking the time to do this. We are staying at the BW Sunrise, Redondo Beach. Do you think this is the same one? Or is there another one? If you happen to know - if not, where is Redondo Beach. :O

Ahhh, my hometown. *Sigh*. I grew up in Long Beach and am very familiar with San Pedro, Long Beach, and surrounding areas. The Aquarium of the Pacific is very nice.

CruisingCA2005, thanks for the pictures. The shots from one of the many hills of San Pedro looking down at the port were great!

AnnaS- Redondo beach is north of San Pedro. If you could draw a line it would be Long Beach----San Pedro----Redondo---Los Angeles. Of course there are cities in between the listed cities, but you get the idea. ;)

DH was born and raised in San Pedro, and we go there often to visit his family. If there are any questions he can help you with, please let me know!

Anna: This is not the same Best Western. The BW in Redondo Beach is around 20-30 minutes northwest of San Pedro. It's not too far but the BW in Redondo isn't really close to a freeway.

It's pouring over here now. :umbrella:

We went over the Vincent Thomas bridge to Terminal Island (then there's another bridge that goes over to Long Beach). Taeja - you'd be surprised at how much Terminal Island has changed since the Long Beach Naval Station was closed. That whole area is filled with containers for shipping companies.

One of these weekends we want to see the port again but go around Palos Verdes Peninsula to see the sights. It's a pretty nice drive through VERY nice neighborhoods and there are parks and various landmarks along the way. I'll be sure to post more pics.

PattiPB and taeja71 - We have reservations at the San Pedro Holiday Inn for the night before the cruise. However, I am going to cancel them as we made reservations at the Best Western Sunrise in Redondo Beach(with AnnaS). Iwas told that San Pedro is not a nice area to stay and we would be beter staying in Redondo. Any help from anyone will be appreciated as we know nothing about these areas. Thanks! CruisingCa2005- thanks for taking the pictures. It gives us an idea what to expect.

The Holiday Inn if I'm correct is right on the main street. I can't think of the street name right now. But, yes, for an evening stay, that part of town isn't that great. I found a like to the BW Sunrise, http://hotels.sidestep.com/hoteldet...h/best_western_sunrise?tk=EIKSSHHPXXXX0000002

Being by the bay will be nice and much safer unless you're in traffic- LOL. ;)
If any of you traveling are not used to metropolitan life, traffic can be or will be congested. Expect slow downs, more accidents, and being bumper to bumper for no reason. If you're traveling in groups of two or more, use the Carpool lanes- they're a time saver. I don't want to burst any one's bubbles about your trip (I wish I could go!), but traffic is one part of L.A. life I don't miss.

CruisingCA2005- If you happen to see my parent's car, wave and say hi for me as your driving around town. ;) And most importantly, stay dry! :umbrella:

Here are some pics of the Aquarium of the Pacific....

Keep the pics coming, you do a great job.

I agree, about L.B. and S.P. changing. Over the last 10 years we've been here in IN we try and go 'home' once a year. Once the shipyard was gone the containers took over. It's so much different from when I grew up. MY MIL was telling me that the Vincent Thomas bridge may be replaced by a taller one. It's been so nice not having to pay tolls going across it. :( If you know any thing about the Signal Hill it used to be vacant. On a clear day you can see it from the VCT bridge, any way, that was my DH's and I's smooching spot  and now the hill has condos all on top of it.

Pop quiz time all, what company used to own the Queen Mary and Spruce Goose?....BUZZZ, DISNEY. I even worked in a retail shop on the QMary herself.

CruisingCA.......
Thanks for the pictures. DH and I were wondering about being able to return a rental car to the port. We are arriving in LAX on 6/28. We figured that renting a car would be cheaper than shuttles from LAX to DL and from DL to the port. The car rental place looks close. Would you say it is close enough to walk to?????

I suppose you could walk to it but Enterprise has a free shuttle to the port. I think it the shuttle was the big white van parked in front of Enterprise (pic #3).

wow, that's so cool looking. I'm getting so excited, starving for any kind of West coast cruise info.

Thanks you made my day!

About Enterprise, you may want to call them. I was told somewhere that you cannot return a car to a different location than you pick it up at. Let us know what they say.

taeja71- thanks for the info. We'll definitely feel better staying in Redondo. Any idea how much time we would need to get to the San Pedro port from Redondo on a Saturday morning?

That's what Yahoo Maps says, but like I said, allow extra time for possible traffic. You should be able to be at port w/ 30-35 minutes easy. You could even travel to the port down the coast via Pacific Coast Highway aka: Highway 1, it would take more time, but you'd get beautiful views of the Pacific ocean!

Between CruisingCA2005 and myself you all out of towners will know the LA area like the back of your hands by the time your cruise time comes along. If there are any other LAers out there, chime in!

Thanks so much for the pictures. That was a real treat.

I had planned to stay the night before the cruise at the Holiday Inn - San Pedro. We won't be arriving until close to midnight and plan to head to the port after check out. So, we don't need any sort of great location. However, we are planning to use the park and cruise option at the Holiday Inn. Is the hotel in a bad area? Will we feel safe for the night and leaving our car there for the week?
