Picking up Kids from School - a Nightmare!!

We live in development across the street from the school. Nice, right? The plan was to walk the kids over every day. No car nightmare.

However, the first grade teacher is ADAMANT that my son is too young to walk with all those cars in the school driveway. Never mind that mom or dad is walking with him and big brother, still too dangerous.

After two weeks of this sitting in the traffic jam, DH has said enough is enough and he's walking over to pick the kids up. Dropping off in the am is fine, the afternoon pick up is a nightmare! School lets out at 2:15, and DH won't get home until 2:50! We live across the street.

I know my DS is only in preschool, but some of the parents dropping off and picking up are maniacs when they get behind the wheel - the drive about 25 in a less than 5 mph zone!

Some *jerk* insists on parking in the fire lane all the time, even though they specifically ask you not to. We got notes last year that a child almost got run over so they ended up putting up cones which blocked people out of driving where they shouldn't.

I hate to say this, but sometimes the minivan moms are the absolute worst drivers on the road. Slow down, and be safe!

But of course people don't do this. They stop right in the middle of the lane, and leave their car while they go look for their child. Or they park, illegally, on the curb, so that a two lane road can barely accommodate one car in any direction. There is a giant "no left turn" sign at the parking lot exit, which doesn't stop anyone from trying to make a left turn.

And even after you patiently wait in the line of cars, it is nearly impossible to see your child, because of the throng of parents who cannot do as the school asks

Are you sure you don't live where I live?

This has happened every year, putting kids in danger of being hit by cars. So, this year the Principal has started walking the parking area. Anyone who stops where they're not supposed to is politely told to park in the designated area. If they don't want to park, they are directed to the pick up line. It's working so far!

I work at a HS - I get there 1/2 hour before school starts - otherwise I would be late for work! We live in a neighborhood across the street from a middle school. Sometimes parents park on our street and have their kids meet them over here.

VA32H-

Sorry, do we have kids at THE SAME SCHOOL? Or are there two schools in this town with the same FAULTY design?

Same story for DS. Most of the time DH picks him up, or another mom will grab him and bring him to me in the afternoon. (I am a nanny so it is hard for me to drag the little ones to pick him up since they are usually napping.)

But on those occasions that I DO have to go get DS it is the same nightmare. The circle drive is packed bumper to bumper, the street is packed both directions, the kids come out in mobs and it is a free for all to try to get your kid in the car and leave! And at least 75% of the parents seem to think the "RIGHT TURN ONLY" sign only applies to OTHER parents, not them. Grrr! It should be a little better this year because they opened a new school that took on about 200 of our students, but I bet I will get to see firsthand tomorrow that it is NOT better.

Too close for the bus - too far to walk in this weather right now. Maybe when it cools down... but although it looks a mess, it is fairly organized and it only takes aboout ten minutes for me to get my DS after school.

The reason I'm there to pick up very early sometimes is cuz DD and I were out running errands and she fell asleep in the car - it's easier to just park and let her sleep. I know it makes me look like some nervous mom - but I'm not, reallly! ;)
