Picking a certain car on RSR?

I've shown my DS4 pictures of RSR and he's really excited to ride it (and just tall enough, thank goodness), but when he talks about riding it, he always phrases it like "I'm going to ride Lightning McQueen", so I'm wondering if he may start throwing a fit if we're riding a car that is not specifically Lightning McQueen. Do they let you pick what car you ride? I'm okay to wait a couple minutes more if I need to, I just want to know. Because if we can't pick our car, I'll try and prepare him for the possibility of riding "Sally" (or whoever, what cars are there anyway?)

None of the cars look like any of the characters form the movie. They have eyes and mouths, but not themed to look like Lightning or Sally or Ramone, etc. When my kids were smaller, we made it a game. What color do you think we will get!?! And made it fun. We also bought them the little die cast car that is a replica of the ride vehicle at Sarges. They loved playing with those and that helped too.

My understanding is that none of the ride vehicles look like a specific Cars character, just a generic one like you would see in the background.

Yes! There are red cars. I'm not sure about asking because I don't know if the CM's know when a red car would be loading. It wouldn't hurt to ask!

Oh, yes. There's red ones. We hit a red one once out of 4 times on the attraction. Once we were one it, my son didn't care what color it was. He just wanted to win the race!

As the PP said, none of the cars actually look like the characters from Cars. So, you don't really have to worry about riding in McQueen or Sally. However, there are various different colors, and if you child associates only the color with a character (i.e., all red cars are McQueen), then you might have a problem. It would be very hard to select the color of car you want because they're not in any set pattern, so it's basically luck of the draw which color you get.

Most of the cars are not red. They are blue (2 shades), yellow, green, purple, brown and a darker red, almost maroon. You really can't tell what color car you're getting in or what color while you're in it, and there really is no place to wait for another car on the platform. Maybe he deserves more credit than you're giving him and will be fine with whatever car pulls into the loading area. On Peter Pan it could be like a game, "What color boat will we get?" I read a post by someone who said that DLR was a good place to work on sharing with her 2 and 3 year olds, like if the color Dumbo or Teacup isn't available, not throwing a fit because someone else is using it.

Thanks for the info, all. I will simply tell him that there are a bunch of different colors and none are Lightning McQueen, and also do the guessing game while waiting. I'm sure, like a PP said, once we are on the ride, he will no longer care.

Just an FYI, the Frank part scares my DS4. I warned him about it before riding, but it still scares him. So he agrees to ride if I cover his eyes during that part. It's right after the tractor tipping part. Frank also scares him in the movie....you might want to talk to your DS4 about it before hand. Have fun!!!

I know the answer to this one because my DD actually asked if she could ride in a red car. The answer is "No, I'm sorry. Because the lines are so long and we have to line up people before the cars line up there is no way of telling what color you will get." It was just totally lucky that DD ended up in a red car! However, the cars don't look like the characters.

There are actually 9 different cars ... 5 "Boy" cars and 4 "Girl" cars. You can tell the difference by the shape of the mouth and the girl cars also have "eye-lashes" above their eyes. Some are also "Convertibles" and some are "Sport Cars"

The guessing game has worked well with our group. Then, when you are *positive* which color you are getting (which isn't until the car pulls up and stops right in front of you), you can say "Yay, we got the ____ car! I hear they are one of the fastest colors!"

As a previous poster said, Frank can be scary. DS6 still doesn't like him, and he's been riding RSR since it opened. There is also a truck right as you first go into the inside portion of the ride, and he honks his horn. DS wasn't thrilled with that the first time either.

If you have PP+, I would have the child in the middle back seat so you can see them in the photo. If you don't care about the ride photo, put him in the front.
When you tell the CM how many are in your party, that is when you ask for back or front row.

OP, I think it is best to prepare your son for what he gets.

It's a tough call, but from a ride perspective, I would always opt for the front row. It's easier to see because the seats don't get in the way. As a relatively short adult, the middle back seat is the worst because you can't really see anything in front of the car (the seat and other passengers, if taller, are in the way), so you can only see out the sides as you pass by things. I did that once and have never done that again. In terms of the ride photo, I think it depends on how "short" is the child. If you Google "Radiator Springs Racers ride photo" you can get a sense of the photo looks and which seat(s) might be best.

The CMs have always let me request a ride row. Some are more friendly about it than other ones. I've never really understood the ones that said I'll have to wait a while before they can accommodate the request. I've only had one CM that was pretty unfriendly and filled several cars with non-related parties before assigning us to a front row. Other than that person, most of the CMs have been fine with it.

Basically, the loading queue is set-up to fill four or five cars at the same time. So as you approach the CM and tell them your party size, they'll tell you which number (i.e., row) to go stand on. It's not always sequential (meaning the party in front of you might go to row "1" and you'll be sent to row "7"). If you want to ride in the front, this is the time to ask. The odd numbers correspond to front rows, while the even numbers correspond to the back row.

My DS6 is 48 inches and DS4 is 45 inches and they both prefer the front on the sides. They say they can see more. I sit in the middle in the front (so I can cover DS4 eyes during the Frank part ) When we are a party of 4 we ask for the front row, and then my DH sits in the back. Looking forward to going in July, because we will be a party of 6!

Here is my experience. We rode the ride the first summer it came out. My son got off the ride after sitting in the back row and said he couldn't see anything. Luckily a CM heard him and came up to us and gave us fastpasses to ride again. This time we asked for the front row, no problem doing that. He got off the ride and was very excited that not only did he get to ride it again but he got to see everything.

Since then every time we go we ask for the front row and we have never had a problem. Now I will say I have read that if you are wanting to buy the picture then if your kids are in the front the eyes of the car might block their face. I am not sure if an adult is in front of the child will they be seen. We don't buy the pictures.

I'm glad to hear that they let you ride 3 and 1. I was in line when a CM was absolutely insistent that a party of 4 ride 2 and 2, so he could put one single rider with each row. They argued for a few moments and then relented, but I noticed when they boarded the car, they had re-arranged themselves: 3 in the front, 1 in the back and (what I presume were the two single riders) the SRs in the back. Sometimes I think the CMs are too focused on making sure the SRs don't end up together. I understand not accepting requests for SRs to ride together, but I don't understand breaking up a non-SR party just to make SRs ride separately.
