Pick your own car at Alamo?

We've rented cars several times, usually with Alamo, but I cannot remember if you get to pick out your vehicle. DS17 is a senior this year, so he gets to pick where we go for a little getaway. He chose Hilton Head so we will fly to Atlanta. One of his requests is a "sporty" car rental (not too sporty, we still have to fit luggage) and he really wants to be able to pick a specific one instead of just being handed the keys.

Cheapest rate right now is Alamo through Costco, but will we be able to pick the specific car?

Are you returning the car to your renting location? If you are Alamo should let you pick have an aisle corresponding to the car class you reserved. Think of it more of a color choice. You're unlikely to find a sport convertible (which won't fit your luggage) in a regular aisle.

Yes, we are returning back in Atlanta. He doesn't actually want a convertible, but likes the Dodge Challenger that is listed in the Standard Specialty category. And, for a 17-year-old guy, picking out the color is everything, lol. Thanks for your help!

Alamo Insiders can complete on-line check-in. That includes an option to provide credit card information so you can skip the counter/kiosk and go directly to the appropriate aisle to pick your rental car. You will need the Alamo confirmation number which Costco includes on the email confirmation (along with the Costco confirmation number). If you are not already an Alamo Insider member, there is no charge to join on the Alamo website.

A challenger or anything like that would require renting a premium car. The least expensive cars your picks will be a Corolla, Camry, Soul

This getaway is to celebrate his senior year, so we are not necessarily looking for the least expensive option. Both the Alamo and Costco site list the Challenger under the Standard Specialty category.

Just an FYI - Not sure if you meant he would drive the car or just wanted to pick out one he thinks is cool, but I believe most companies don't allow 17 yr olds to drive them. The actual renter has to be 25, but the additional drivers can be signed up who are under that (some have an underage driver fee) although it is mostly for ages 21-24. Some companies do allow 18-20, with 2 yrs experience - your DS may be 18 by the time of your trip, but just wanted to give you a heads up to check into it so as not to be disappointed later. (I realize you can still allow him to drive it while on vacation if you like - just passing on the info!)

Thanks, yes, he sadly knows that he won’t be allowed to drive it. I did not know though that some allow 18-year-olds, so I will have to look into that!

...yes, you'll be able to pick from whatever they have in the "standard specialty" or "sporty" aisle, or whatever they call it at ATL, but remember it doesn't necessarily mean you'll get a Dodge Challenger...
