I was thinking of doing the pick-a-pearl thing for my DD7 when we visit in August. I was going to buy her one of the cages online ahead of time (I really don't want to spend a fortune on a setting). I know my DS5 will also want to do this. Do they have anything cool out there for the boys to do with theirs?

Also, is it ok to bring your own, or is this frowned upon?

Why not buy one of those carriages ahead and put the pearl in that. They don't need to be set, you just open the door and put the pearl in. I really can't say if they will set it in one you bring in. I love mine, I'm wearing it now! I got a simple setting 4 years ago, silver, not expensive really. If you take the pearl home with you your jeweler can set it at home, no need to set it there. After all, unless you are experienced in setting jewelry you'll have to pay someone right?

I could be wrong, but I do believe the OP was talking about the same cage that you are :)

We did this a few years ago after buying the carriage pearl cage online before our trip. I bought the cage from a seller on eBay. After my daughter received her pearl we just put it in the cage ourselves. I don't think it's frowned upon- at least I didn't notice anything. Good question though about something cool for boys. I'm curious about that now, too! :)

We always pick a pearl every year, sometimes two. My daughter doesn't always want to make jewelry. They do have a little glass bottle to buy with sand in it. They are pretty cheap. You can always add additional ones to it if you get them in the future too.

I ordered the carriage (I got the larger one to be sure the pearl would fit), took it with us, and the CMs put it in for my daughter. They were great...she loved it!

We did Pick a Pearl in Japan in November and loved the whole experience! They really make it special! We bought our cage carriages before our trip on Etsy for only $8 each and brought them with us to put out pearls in. I picked 2 oysters... 1 had a nice size gorgeous pearl it was close to 8mm and the 2nd oyster had twin pearls! It was so cool. I gave each twin pearl to my 2 nieces in their own carriage cage and kept the bigger pearl for myself. I would recommend trying Etsy for your carriage!

I got my carriage on Etsy, but I have a (possibly stupid) question for those who did too! How do you open it? I see the little hinge at the bottom of the carriage, but I'm afraid to break it if I try to open it the wrong way! :confused3 TIA

So the CM's will set the pearl in a cage you bring with you? I thought they would only do one that you purchased there. If so, that is great news, my DD can get her Cinderella carriage cage.

It's not really setting the pearl like a jewelry setting. You actually put it in the cage yourself and snap it closed.

Thanks for this thread, just reminded me I needed to order cages. Just ordered the minnie mouse and the cindy carriage. I will let my daughter pick which one she likes.

I have asked this before, but does anyone know if you get the disney visa discount on pick a pearl and settings at the japan pavillion? We did it last year at downtown disney and did not get the discount because it is run by a third party. Was thinking we should do japan this year.

I did the pick a pearl years ago and never did anything with my pearl :guilty:

It's still in the plastic baggy and tucked inside my jewelry box. I think I may check out Etsy for some cages soon!

I like the idea of the cage does anybody know of a place that uses real silver instead of plate? My metal allergy would keep me from wearing those cheap ones.

Ours open when you take the chain off. The top of the carriage has that loop. The chain is what makes it stay closed.

Do they have screwback settings for babies. Would like to have a set made for my 1 year old

We are both very sensitive to nickel in jewelery. I ordered the pearl cage from ebay. It says it's silver, but I replaced just the chain with a nickel-free one from a reputable nickel-free jewelery site that I've used before, just in case. I got a bit longer chain so the carriage rests on our clothes instead of our skin. However, there have been plenty of times the cage touched our skin and it didn't bother us. I think for us the contact has to be constant and for more than a few hours to make us itchy and red.

I got two of these exact ones from ebay:
