I had a free subscription to American Photo that is expiring, and I would like to ask for a subscription to a photography magazine for Christmas. Which ones do you like best?

I'm interested in Photoshop techniques, tips for better pictures, hints for dslr use, etc. Thanks in advance.

Depends on your area of interest. For example, I like scenic/landscape photography, so I have a subscription to Outdoor Photographer. There are some really great internet sites that have forums and very informative articles. So, check those out, too.

Very pricey (about US $145 per year - it's a UK magazine) but, PhotoPlus Canon Edition. Comes with CD tutorials for PhotoShop and Elements, DSLR tips and techniques. While it is a Canon oriented magazine, the tips and techniques are common for most cameras.

I get mine by the month at Barnes & Noble.

Just my $.02

A friend of mine gave me a bunch of Popular Photography magazines someone was throwing out at work. I really like them. The subjects were varied (sort of like around here) and nothing was too "over my head". I looked online and saw that a two year subscription was only about $24. Maybe check it out.

Popular Photography is probably the most widely circulated photography magazine, at least in the U.S.. It shares the same publisher as American Photo. A relative gifted me a one year subscription to Popular Photography last year, but I've thumbed through it on the newsstands for years. The magazine is geared towards amateurs and hobbyists. They re-hash the same info, techniques, and tips over and over again. Apparently, they haven't met a piece of photography equipment that they didn't love (LOL). Just about all of their product reviews are glowing, presumably because they don't want to upset the small group of manufactuers who buy ad space in the magazine. That's not to say that the magazine is completely worthless, it's okay...just don't put any stock in their reviews.

Thank you very much! Ya'll's thoughts help.

I've seen one of those Photoshop magazines at Barnes and Noble... the one that's about $50.00 for one issue:scared1: . I sat there for about 1 1/2 hours looking through it. Wow, I'd love to have that delivered to my house! But I don't want to spend that much, nor to I want to ask somebody else to. It had some amazing techniques. hmmmm... i may have to stop at a used book store, see if they have any....

PhotoPlus Canon edition is about $13 US per single edition at B&N. I usually only buy the ones that have content that I am interested in, although that seems to be each month lately.

Was in Florida in mid October and picked up the Nov issue. Had a good article / tutorial in it on using AV mode with the Xsi (which I have) and taking pix of animals. Pro tips were especially useful for me while in FL. First time I have really tried using it seriously and really did appreciate the article explaining several things in more detail.

Which is why I no longer subscribe to any magazines.

But it does sound like this is what the OP is looking for. There's a wide range of experience here - advanced hobbyists (and a few pros), bumbling amateurs, and everything in between.

Apparently, they haven't met a piece of photography equipment that they didn't love (LOL).
Yes, I knew there was something I liked about them. :lmao:
