Need some opinions...

Am considering purchasing a Domke PhoTOG vest http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/142544-REG/Domke_734_005_PhoTOGS_Vest_XX_Large_Khaki_.html#reviews for use in WDW and elsewhere as a replacement for my now undersized waist bag. My main concern is that this is one of the standard items for the Pros, and might attract unwanted attemtion from Cast Members thinking I was a Pro myself. Viewing a few of my strictly amatuerish shots would dispel this illusion quickly, but first impressions count and the hassle factor might outweigh the convenience factor of all those marvelous pockets.

What think you ???

Thanks,
Bryant Lucas

I certainly mean no offense to those that like them, but I think those are the dorkiest things made. I would also imagine that they are extremely hot at WDW. I think if you are by yourself going through the gates, you might get some hassle, but if you are with a few other people you would not be approached.

beats the heck out of lugging a bag all day,

I sort of do take offense to that, as I generally do at the use of the word dork...

do you know what a dork is..

and as for heat, a good vest made of cotton and vented in the back isn't as hot as you would think..

as for the hassle, when I worn mine at WDW I was stopped once and asked if I was a pro, many other times I was mistaken for a photopass photog. and asked if I would take a picture of people, one photopass photog asked if I knew where another was working that day.. and another photopass photog. thought I was his replacement in tunetown at the character meet & greet area..

So says the man wearing a pointy hat and ears in his avatar! :rotfl:
I think you could have chosen a better word than dorky. How can that not be taken with offense? (By the way, I do like your avatar, just think it's kind of ironic!)

!! LOL do you put your lens in these vests?
I like to go hands free and it's easy for me but I can see the point of extra storage, sometimes I wear my son's cargo pants

Well, I know Kevin didn't mean any offense by his post. The OP was just asking for opinions, and that was his. Just because he chooses not to wear/buy one, doesn't mean he was out to call everyone names and offend them.

if you are interested I can give you a source for a similar vest for only 40

yes.. the vests that I own have a pocket that is divided in 2 specifically for holding lenses, I keep my batteries, memory cards, cleaning stuff etc, in my vest at all times, when going on a shoot I grab the vest, whatever lenses I want , flASHES..and of course my 2 cameras and I'm good for the day

Yeah, I know what you mean. I did realize what part of the whale it refers to, but most people don't associate that with the word when they say it. Oh, well.... I say if it's convenient/helpful for carrying your stuff w/o having to necessarily rely on a bag on your back all day, GO FOR IT. DH tends to wear things on vacation that he doesn't normally wear around town because it makes the trip easier. For instance, his WDW bucket hat. He bought it because he's part bald and it keeps the sun off all around his head and not just the front. Anyway, I didn't mean to hijack the OP's question. I think if you like the vest and it can hold your equipment to where it's more easily accessible, do it. That's what vacation SHOULD be about.

I don't necessarily have an opinion on the vest other than I wouldn't want to feel like a pack mule all day, but seriously - these can't be the nerdiest things you've seen. I mean just walking around WDW I have seen more crocs and fanny packs than I ever wanted to set eyes on. :rotfl:

I think convenience and practicality plays a large part in people's choices of attire for WDW. Comfort is KEY. I hardly ever even wear sneakers. In the summer I like flip flops, in the winter I like boots/flats...but last year for WDW no matter how decent looking the outfit, I had sneakers on in every picture.

To each their own. If it is something you would find practical for your trip and would like to wear, go for it! I will say that I like Mickey88's suggestion of a similar one for $40. Save money where you can, especially if this is going to be your first vest and you may end up not liking it. :goodvibes:

And who exactly are you anyway??? I have been on here about every day for the past three years and I do not recognize your name at all. So, without knowing me, maybe you should refrain from insulting me. :thumbsup2 MICKEY88 has also been on here long enough to know that I would not make a personal attack on him.

Sorry if anyone took that word as offensive b/c IMO that is just about the mildest word I can think of to describe something that is going to make people stare, point, and insult you in person. It is not like I was cursing. If you do not care what others think of you and will not get mad if you overhear people making fun of you, then go for it. I would never be that rude, but society has moved to a place where manners are almost non-existent. This is especially true at WDW. I believe this is pertinent information for the OP to know.

While I respect the functionality of a vest, I'm far to concerned with my appearance to wear something like that. It is important to me to look dignified and respectable when I'm out in public.

LOL//Hmmm where is that awesome pic of MArk at WDW:lmao:

I believe that there were some shots of you from your business trip to WDW that would suggest otherwise. :rotfl2:

I agree, that's why I said there was nothing personal against you,

my experience was, the only thing I overheard ,was people thinking I was a photopass photog,

although my experience this season at the PA Renn Fairre, was that people would would either comment on the serious looking cameras I was carrying, or they would ask what the heck the gary fong was...LOL

Always interested in saving money, more to spend on trinkets and baubles in the park. :cool2: As long as saving $50 will not endanger my thousands of dollars worth of camera equipment with lesser quality fabric or fasteners.

As far as being concerned about appearances, I'm a 39 year old balding overweight guy who will be wearing shorts, flip flops, and a Goofy hat...not so concerned about appearances. Also, I repair computers for a living, and revel in the label of Geek, not so concerned about words others use to describe me. Maybe a few decades ago, not so much after a bit more seasoning.

I actually enjoy sharing my limited expertise when requested by my fellow amateur photogs, so unofficial attention is not necessarily a deal breaker.

GET ONE!!!! ;)

I wanted one for years but Mrs Varkie suggested that certain physical marrital expectations may be in short supply as a consequence !!!

LOL, well you've already heard from the Photography Board's Favorite Geek, though you might not be aware of it. (I'll have to look up dork.)

I struggle with this issue at WDW too. How to stay comfortable and functional while still looking like myself. I'm not a sneaker person, nor a backpack person, nor a hat person, nor a vest person myself (so I as yet have no idea how I'm going to carry my dSLR around next trip :lmao: )

I couldn't care less what anyone else is wearing, though. In fact, one of the things I love the most about WDW is seeing people letting their hair down a bit and having FUN!

So I say sure, get the vest if that's what you think is going to work for you. Just please, one request: we want to see PICTURES!! :rotfl:

I myself take no offense in the word "dork" as most people use it today and as how Kevin was referring too. . I find what works best for me is to have my wife carry my camera bag, so I am free to take pictures.
