That sounds like a great idea. I use Pbase.com and we get the choice of small, medium, large, and original.

It looks like the options they give you depend on the size of the original. I like the change - before I had to "do the math" to figure out 75%, 50%, 25% of the original, and sometimes for the boards I had to do 50%, and then 75%.... oy vey!!!!

If you are going for a particular size, it's probably much faster and easier to resize them on your own. Irfanview makes it extremely easy and quick to resize your photos however you like, one at a time or in an easy but very powerful batch mode. www.irfanview.com - I don't know what I'd do without it!

For this example, if you want to resize all your photos to a maximum width of, say, 700 and a maximum height of 600, it'll do it and toss 'em in a new folder for you. That way you don't have to screw around with trying to have Photobucket (or wherever) resize them, plus Irfanview will do a nice job resizing, unlike some programs which leave you with ugly jagged lines whenever you resize.

I just looked a llittle closer, and you can now resize them on upload in Photobucket.. YEAH!

I haven't played with it much yet, but check out PixVue... it's an easy way to add keywords to many photos at once and to make them all searchable, including ones on CD. For example, once you're put in the appropriate keywords, you could put in "disney food" and find all Disney food pictures, or just "boma" and it would find those. You can also add groups of photos to specific galleries, which appear in Windows Explorer as a new folder (and you're not actually copying the file itself, so you can toss pictures in multiple galleries without worrying about them getting disorganized.) One of these days I'll get a chance to play with it in depth - it seems to be very slick and many people love it.

Irfanview, in its Thumbnails app, also lets you add keywords to many pictures at once, but again, I haven't had the time to play with that too seriously to decide if that works better or worse than PixVue. I suspect they'll complement each other.

I think the problem is me, but just in case I thought I'd ask anyway.

The last couple of times I've used Photobucket, it seemed to take really long to upload my pix, and I was only doing 2 or 3 at a time. Is this because my old camera (Canon A70) was only a 3mp camera and my new Canon S3IS is a 6mp? I assume the 3 extra mp's add to the size of the photo file and hence the longer upload time?

Yes that would be part of it... Also, If the files are too large, then Photobucket reduces the size, which also takes time as well.

That is why it may be best to resize the photos yourself. Especialy if you have PhotShop or any other program that will do batch resizing. You control the quality of the resizing and the upload will be quicker.

My first Digi cam was 5MP and now it is 8Mp. I never resized before but the uploads are much longer now, so I am resizing before sending. It takes up more space on the computer, saving all the different files like original, final edit at original size, then resized files etc....

Another Suggestion is look at investing into a smugmug or similar account. It allows you to upload your pictures at full size. Which lets you use their servers and storage as an offsite back up.... plus you can link and share you photos like do with photobucket and no advertising to deal with when your there.... and all for about $34 bucks a year... its a great investment IMO.

The free Irfanview is exceedingly good at batch resizing (and also at darn near everything else it does.) It's one of the best free programs you can get. Highly, highly recommended!

Thanks - that what I thought the problem was. I don't have Photoshop Elements (hoping Santa will get it for me), so I've just been using the software that came with my camera. I'll have to check and see how I can resize them before uploading.

I've been making a copy of the originals, then resizing the copies, uploading the newly resized copy, then deleting the newly resized copy. Leaving just the original in my computer.

Also, after seeing so many people loose photos after uploading to now defunct PhotoPoint years ago for storage & not keeping files for themselves, I cringe whenever I hear people ONLY putting their photos somewhere online & not keeping copies. Paid site or not. Our computer backs up automatically every Monday 2am to DVD. And if hard drive getting WAY too full, I'll make separate DVDs (and an extra copy to put in fire proof safe) & purge some off computer.

There was a neat little Windows PowerToys for XP tool that you could download free. Simply right click photo & pick resize. Mine seems to have stopped working due to something else we've upgraded in Windows. Haven't been able to get it going after researching online. So we downloaded free Microsoft Office Picture Manager. It lets you resize in batches. So far, only thing I've been using it for. But I REALLY miss the neat powertoys thing. It was so easy to just right click & not have to open another application & locate the photos. sigh.....

I just got PAint Shop Pro Photo 11 the newest version, it has even more neat features, there is a one click skin smoother, it's awesome..

You and me both, Splash!! I was perfectly happy with my old camera until I discovered the weekly photo contest here and saw the great shots other people were taking. So now I got a new camera and next on my list is Photoshop Elements, and our local community college had a class this fall on using PS Elements, so I'll probably sign up for that in the spring......

I noticed this thread on the DVC-Mousellaneous board and thought I'd bring it here for a heads-up. Apparently, some people who use Photobucket got an email notice that any photos with copyrighted Disney characters would be deleted. I haven't noticed this happening on my account yet, and I didn't get the email, but others on that thread said their entire sub-albums of Disney have been deleted.

All my smug mug pictures are still there. . . . for now.

But some of the other threads I have read make it sound like they are going after people who have made photo-frames or wallpaper using copyrighted images (not vacation photos), but then deleting their entire album. It will be interesting to see how this develops.

Interesting.

We watched a BBC show recently that was talking to a guy covered with tattoos who claimed that he was the only person on the planet legally allowed to get Disney tattoos. And we know that Disney has forced a daycare center to take down homemade Disney artwork. (Good thing they haven't caught my son's doctor yet!)

I would guess that the thing to do is find a host that doesn't allow the photos to be printed - I would assume that that's Disney's concern, that people were profiting off photos taken with their characters.
