Photo printer

Thanks for the link to the thread, and all your input.

I've not heard of MPix, so I'll check out that site as well.

Off to research more -

I'll second MPIX:thumbsup2 . I've ordered many prints from them for myself and others. I like the option of being able to choose different papers and finishing. Quality is excellent. I have an Epson PictureMate and Canon 950 but with the cost of the consumables (cartridges & quality paper), it turns out cheaper to order what I want online even with shipping. I have also used Target and picked up my prints. They are good for quick prints but if I want something I’ll frame, it’s off to MPIX.

Postscript is a programming language used to control some printers (notably early Apple Laserwriters and now including "printers" up to warehouse-sized print presses). Every printer needs a control language, Postscript was one of the few designed to work with several types/makes of printers.

We use Photoshop (and PE) on Windows XP with a Canon Pixma i5000, an Epson R1800 and a small laser (HP?). They all work well.

I think that the reviewer in the Amazon page might be confused: (a) mentions using a Macintosh computer on which (back in my Mac days, anyway) PS defaults to want a Postscript printer and (b) the Canon printer we bought came with Windows drivers but the Macintosh drivers had to be downloaded, so perhaps the reviewer didn't/couldn't do this.

I don't think you'll have a problem with the Canon All-In-One and PE using PE on Windows.
HTH.

Ive got a problem with my printer and Lightroom.

Every time I switch the printer on Lightroom launches automatically whether I want it to or not. Any techies out there who can tell me how to disable this.

Also in Lightroom theres an option to "Back up catalog" (Once a week, month etc...). Could anyone tell me how to get into the menu for this and change the setting?

TIA

I think I can help with the second one.

Go to Edit, Preferences. Then on the bottom of the General tab go to "Go To Catalog Settings". Once in the Catalog Settings, the middle of the General tab will let you change it from Never, Once a Day, Once a Week, etc.

Does your printer have a card reader in it? Might there be a card in one of the slots?

Go into Preferences > Import section > Show import dialog when a memory card is detected and uncheck it.

Then look down in your system tray (bottom right hand corner of the Windows toolbar) and see if there's an 'Adobe Photo Downloader' there - if there is, right click and disable.

Ahh, Adobe Photo Downloader, the scourge of my existance!

You can also keep it from loading at all, but I don't remember off the top of my head if it's in the Startup folder (which I think it is, and is very easy to remove from there - just rt-click and delete from the Start menu), or in the registry.

I would agree that the printer probably has memory card slots, though Photo Downloader really shouldn't pop up unless there's actually a card in there.

Thanks mabas. :thumbsup2 I cant believe I missed that. I've been searching for the solution to this for ages.

I've done both of those and it seems to have solved the problem. I dont know which one was causing it but thank goodness its fixed. It was begining to really annoy me. :)

I knew I'd get sorted out by the members on this board. Thanks everyone! : :worship:

I was wondering what a Really good printer is for printing photos(color)

are they all pretty equal?

does someone recommend one over the other?

& while Im at it...which photopaper does everyone recommend...what brand for both glossy & matte

THANKS!!!!

budget: if possible ...under $200 but im willing to look at others if its worth the investment:goodvibes

I would sugest the Kodak ones, the print quality is amazing and it has the cheapest ink out of all of the printers (per page and per cartridge price is the cheapest) and depending on which one you get it can easily be under $200.

I like my Nixon p & s cuz its simple (and thats really what I need) and takes good pics as long as you're not in a low light situation.

But I have been hearing about 'personal printers' that are small, portable and easily taken with you and your laptop...anyone have any idea if there are any that print photos well?

thanks!

I have a portable HP Photosmart A616. It's about a year old. It has suddenly starting printing out horrible pictures. The color is way off. Could this be a cartridge problem or is the printer dying? If it's dying, does anyone have any recommendations on another compact home photo printer? I don't really use it a lot -- just for quicky photo prints. Anything else major gets farmed out. Thanks!

It sounds like it could be clogged heads. See if there is a maintance area in your print area and clean the heads out, you may have to do thie 2 times if it is clogged bad. The next is to check if there is ink in all the cartridges. I had someoen once that the printer said there was ink in it but it was empty.
If you are looking to get a new printer I would reccomend Epson printers. If you go to their web site in the US you can go to their clearance center and they have some great buys on their referbs. And I think there are some super specials this weekend on them for the holiday.

Hope it is nothing too bad for you.

BTW I got one of the picture mates that just does 4x6 prints and took it on our last cruise. DW & DD were scrapbooking to relax one day, and DD love to put up pics of things she did during the trip. And also like to take the pics of her and the characters back for them to sign the pic from the previous day or earlier that day.

If you don't get the heads cleaned, you many want to look at one of the Canon Selphy (CP740, CP760) Compact Printers. I have an older model and it works very well. I have had good results with the dye-subliminal thermal transfer printing system that these printers use. The cost per print including paper is around 27-30 cents depending on where you purchase the printing kit.

As an aside as an avid Nikon Camera user, I have always been partial to Canon printers. In addition to the selphy printer, I own a Canon Pro9600 printer which replaced a Canon i9900 and a Canon i860. I have always had great results with the Canon Photo printers.

We currently own a hp photosmart 7960. I hate the thing. It just doesn't make nice photos. Usually there is a streak/line through the left side of the picture.

Anyway, I'm looking for something better. We don't print a lot of pictures but want something good, but not really expensive.

Any suggestions

Did you try to run a cleaning cycle? I am afriad that I can't offer a printer suggestion, I have just about given up trying to print at home, I find that the cost of a print at home can run upwards of 25 cents, I can print cheaper and of a better quality at wal-mart or another local lab.

I've never ran a cleaning cycle and we do mostly print out, but sometimes inconvienent plus color printing comes out crappy too.

Thanks for the tip

Does anyone have this? Do you like it? Our HP copier/printer has died and I think my Epson PictureMate is on it's way out, too. I just saw an infomertial on the Kodak and it was pretty impressive. Thought I'd check with the DIS experts to see what you though. BYW, it was $149 plus s/h on the infomertial...same price as my HP when I bought it.

I'd appreciate any comments anyone has to offer! Thanks.
