Look! The shipyard finished building the third Disney ship in secret! Here's a photo that I took this afternoon from the balcony of our hotel suite here on the shores of the Adriatic Sea. You can't see it on the picture, but I was able to make out the name of the ship. It's the Disney Fantasia! The shipyard is just north of this town.
Now that the secret is out, the shipyard workers are finally being allowed to tell their spouses what they've been working on. That's what a shipyard worker told me over a cold Birra Menabrea at the trattoria downstairs. When I pressed him about whether there will be a sister ship to the Disney Fantasia, he wouldn't say. But he mentioned that they're very busy with another cruise ship. When I named every cruise line I could think of, he said "no," that it wasn't for that line. When I said Disney, he also said "no" -- but he tried to hide a smile.
In my opinion, the Disney Fantasia doesn't look as elegant as the Disney Magic and Disney Wonder. But it has a lot more balconies. And the water slide behind the rear stack looks like it's not just for kids. (I hope they change the color of the slide. It looks stupid the way it is.)
Okay. I confess. This is a picture of the Carnival Pride -- with a few modifications. This is not the Disney Fantasia. It's not the Disney Dreams either. And I'm not in Italy. And I don't think I've ever met a shipyard worker. And I've never tried Birra Menabrea -- I just found it on the Internet when I did a search for Italian beer.
But there's actually a reason for this picture. If Disney tries to optimize the use of space, the way that other cruise lines do, the result is likely to be a floating brick, like the Carnival Pride. The recent rumors have been that the third Disney ship will be somewhat larger than the current Disney ships, and will have more staterooms and an additional deck of verandah staterooms. That about describes the Carnival Pride!
I hope that the next Disney ship (if the rumors are true) won't look like a floating brick.
