Back in 1990 when our DS17 was just an infant, we took our first trip to Oglebay Resort in Wheeling, WV, to see their Winter Festival of Lights. It turned into a yearly tradition, a mini-getaway weekend, always the first weekend in December. However, this year we had our marching band trip to WDW over that weekend, so Oglebay was canceled. But since it's only 1-1/2 hours away, we drove down Thursday night to see the lights, and we kept the tradition alive.
One of the light displays that greets you as you're approaching Oglebay Resort - to me it almost looks like stained glass:
This is Willard the snowman, named after Willard Scott, the tv weatherman. The Festival of Lights started very small in the Good Zoo that's part of Oglebay, and in 1985 they decided to take it resort-wide, and Willard Scott came to throw the switch and turn the lights on that year.
One of the two drive-thru tunnels:
A series of light displays looks like a Peanuts comic strip - Lucy pulling out the football when Charlie Brown runs up to kick it:
One of the displays that are ON the lake:
One of my favorites, the poinsettia wreath. This thing is huge!! 75 feet in diameter and the candles are 50 feet tall.
Another favorite of mine:
And since we're on the DIS boards, Cinderella's castle and coach:
