Do American phones work in the UK?

I know that the plug on the end is different but converters are readily available but do the phones themselves work

A tri-band phone bought int the UK works in the USA. So, logic would dicate that a tri-band phone from the USA should work in the UK - I think!

When we were in the states my husband converted a lot of US phones for people that were returning to the UK but these were analogue phones, it might be a different kettle of fish now the majority are digital.

Think she's talking about ordinary land-line phones, not mobiles guys! Kylie, we bought a Minnie Mouse phone 4 years ago and got an adapter thrown in with it and it worked no problem!

Ah ... I see that now. But, I can't imagine taking my home phone across the Atlantic, well, not before the kitchen sink!

I remember seeing a fantastic 'Basketball' phone in Florida a few years ago which I absolutely knew DS would love.

I wasn't certain, at the time, whether it would work in the UK so didn't buy it

Most moderns 'phone (ie digital) will work. The lead needs an adapter to connect the US RJ11 connector to the UK BT connector. If the lead unplugs from the 'phone, it my be easier just to get a UK modem lead, as most modems use RJ11 at the PC/modem end.

Having a 'phone in you luggage,with all the electroics and wiring will probably guarantee that your bags will be opened and searched

Thanks for the advice. We have seen phones(not mobiles) on previous trips but always balked at the thought of bringing them home for them not to work.

With laptop chargers, battery chargers, camera leads one more is not going to make any differance
